Aroma of coffee, roasted malts, smoke, and hops. Flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, smoke, smooth, and hop in the presence. Good body, good brew. JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 24, 2003 While I totally missed any suggested smokiness, I found this light bodied, oily porter to be chock full of great flavors. Huge oatmeal, chocolates, and gourmet coffees. Dry hoppiness is light and the aftertaste is sweet and subtle. The empty bottle does give off a bit of smokiness, more like a dying campfire than smoked meat, ala most rauchbiers. BeerLimey (1873), California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 13, 2002 Can’t see too many faults with this one. Great mix of flavors, impressive smoothness and dryness in the finish. Very well built and balanced. As for the previous complaints of lack of smoke, did they change the recipe? It’s definitely more of a dry roasted finish but the smokiness certainly comes through mid-palate. Beer2000 (1862), Kristiansand, Norway
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 2, 2008 Updated: Jul 31, 200922 oz bottle. Dark brown body with a small dense beige head. Aroma is smoked, some liquorices, chocolate and coffee as well. Flavor is light roasted malt, some chocolate malt, coffee and a decent bitterness. Not bad at all, but I find it a bit weak and disappointing anyway comparing with many other fine smoked porters. Maybe has something to do with a relative low ABV
Re-ratet 650ml bottle. Dark brown with a medium beige head. Quite mild roasted malt aroma with coffee and chocolate. Flavor has a mild and pleasant roastines, malt, chocolate, coffee with a gentle balanced bitter finish. Very pleasant and easy drinkable.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2008 Dark dark brown with a large slowly settling light tan head with some sticky loops of lacing and great retention. Mostly roasted porter malts, the smoke is there but not enough to warrant the smoked name. Some grassy hops on the nose. Taste is more smokiness over top of roasted malts, heavy hop bite combines with the bitter roasted malt. LinusStick (1859), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 24, 2006 Pours a dark black with a tan ring. As the name suggests, the taste is of smokey malts with coffee and chocolate undertones. A great offering by Stone, but I’ve had tastier porters. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 20, 2007 On tap Stone brewpub. Pours black with a thick brown lacy head. Smells of sweet caramel, dark malts, and light smoke. Taste is pretty smoky as expected. Still the sweetness remains in the foreground. The finish is somewhat bitter as smoky beers somewhat are. Kind of a nuttiness to it with a thick mouthfell. Damn good porter. Crosling (1856), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 26, 2004 Deep Brown. Deep, malt driven aroma with a touch of smoked malts and a hint of chocolate, coffee, tar and dark fruits. Silky, sticky, coating and heavy body and feel on palate. An instant 5 on the palate. Big for its size. Notes of chocolate, coffee and wet pavement along with a very small amount of smoke. Tasty.
