| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 4, 2006 a rauchbier this isn’t,aroma was coffee ,malt, and a touch of smoke,the texture was smooth as silk,taste was chocolately sweetish, and just a tinge of smoke,actually not even enough to warrant the word in the name Stine (1381), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 31, 2007 Notable roast in that initial aroma. Pour of blackened oak hue. An initially dense head recedes into a thin layer of greyish skin. Suggestions of oranges and pine sap on the nose. Direct hoppiness. Astringent French roast, slightly sour, eases its way in beside a thick mash of wild rice and maple syrup. Silky smoke and milk chocolate taste. Sweetness is prevalent for the most part as a calm vanilla tobacco, which has a bit of citrus sparkle to it. Black coffee with a lot of sweetening. There’s a breath of smoky evergreen bitterness before a thoroughly residual coke sugar finish. Reasonably heavy presence in the mouth, but lacks the velvet texture to contextualize it. The malts are somehow insufficient, or just poorly paired. Solid, though. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2006 Updated: Oct 11, 2008Almost black in color with just a little bit of light leaking through at the ends of the glass. Wonderful smokey aroma compliments a strong chocolatey smell. This is a phenomenal porter in its own right that is topped off with the addition of smoke. Absolutely fantastic compliment to the chocolate and coffee notes that dominate most porters. Highly recommended. I have to get more of this stuff. AgentSteve (1379), SF Bay Area, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 30, 2008 Poured a little too vigorously, so it had a huge foamy, frothy head. Beautiful head. Nose is roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is smooth and roasted malt with some coffee, just like the nose. Slight bitter finish. Good brew. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 28, 2004 Small creamy off white head that lasts and a dark brown/red body. Aroma at first smelled like a smoked barleywine. Kind of an a smoked apple thing. Tastes pretty good... I didn't find a lot of smoked flavor (maybe I'm just immune to it), but did think the finish had a smoked hops/bitterness to it. Overall had a roasted maltiness, with some burnt apple. Body/mouthfeel was ok, but could have been thicker. I liked it! LaChad (1375), San Francisco, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 2, 2002 I hadn’t heard of this before trying it in Stone’s tasting room, and of all their brews, I like it second only to their Russian Imperial. I’m a bit surprised it’s not rated higher. Very dark color, nice tan head. Smoky coffe smell, and the same impressively smooth-but-not-overpowering feel and flavor that you get out of the R.I.S. Very nice mouthfeel, too. The guy behind the bar in Stone’s tasting room told me that he sometimes has this and chocolate doughnuts for breakfast. Now THAT’s a breakfast of champions! pantanap (1375), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 6, 2008 tap had at the Stone Bistro on 3/2.... a dark brown almost black pour allowing some light to penetrate. topped off with a tan had that settled after some time.... nose of chocolate malt with lighter hints of smoke and ash....flavores of smoke, burnt roast, chocolate. really light on the palate overall, smooth and highly drinkable. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 25, 2004 deep brown, light brown head, mostly not lasting. aroma is lightly chocolatey, don’t really detect any roast, some chalkiness. flavor is virtually the same with a lightly to moderately hopped finish. mouthfeel is fairly substantial. i was shocked that the smoke is barely detectable in the aroma and undetectable in the flavor. while i think schlenkerla beers are somewhat overly smoked, this beer is undersmoked for the style. However, this is still a good porter, just not really what i would call a smoked porter.
