COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Damn this is a good beer! Coffee and chocolate aroma is very appealing. The taste is a combination of both those flavors, together with a hint of smokiness and medium bitterness. The result is something sublime. Relatively small head atop a black body. Incidentally, I would classify this beer as a robust porter, as the smokiness is not a major player in the flavor.

Pours a syrupy brown only to settle in the glass as super dark brown, nearly black, excellent lookin' porter. Firm thick, inch tall tannish cocoa colored head that fades slowly leaving hazy thin placed sheets of crispy looking lace all over the glass. Absolutely gorgeous! Aroma is nice steady sweet chocolate/cocoa, very smooth, rich, and a great smokey richness of roasted deep chocolate and black malts. Even a slight coffeeness noted. Yum! Taste is quite exceptional, excellently done of smooth sweet chocolate up front, tones of roastyness settle in quickly of smoked black malts. Rich, luscious, and a super interior hop bitterness of mild abode that picks up in the finish with some more roasty smokeyness and hoppy, earthed bitterness and slight dryness of coffee and twinged chocolate late. Good full feel, solid creamyness all through and an excellent lingering finish of slight smoke, what a shock; not. The drinkability on this is amazing - smooth, rich, creamy, and easy. Thank goodness it comes in the 22oz bomber to help keep the glass full longer, at least for a little while anyway.

Smoked porter? mmm sounds not very tasty..but lets see. Well as with all Stone brews I have had so far this beer looks absolutlly great..deep mahogany brown beer..with some garnet accents when held to the light and on top a huge frothy tan head..great stuff. Wow the aroma of this beer blew my mind..this is great stuff..roasted deep dark chocolate malts mixed with some great black coffee..and with a luxurious smokey smell below. The taste is just as I described the aroma except I get that wondeful Stone creamieness..fantastic stuff. Wonderful and smooth on the palate..with some great aftertatse. A most drinkable porter indeed..I did not think I would like this "smoked" beer..but its just great. I dunno whats happening to me but im becoming a Stone freak..god help me!

A well balanced and damn tasty smoked porter, and feels a lot stronger than the listed 5.9% alcohol. Now if only I could get it in 6 packs... ;)

At first glance, this beer is the solid black of the monolith. When held to the light, it yields a very intense, low-frequency red of an LED. The head is thick, lumpy, and tan. The aroma is that of roasted coffee, a hint of smoke, and possibly spuce and licorice. I can’t help but notice the cementish smell of the yeast. It is instantly recognizable as a California beer. The flavor is very pulled-together. The smoke flavor does not at all overwhelm. The bitterness is appropriately prominent with a grapefruitish flavor. Perhaps this is from Cascades? Again, very California. It seems to be around 35 IBU. The citrus bitterness melds seamlessly with that of dark coffee and dark chocolate. It avoids being astringent and the smoke flavor merely lurks in the background. If anything, it serves to enhance the overall roasted flavor. It is medium-bodied and very drinkable. This could serve as a session beer. The carbonation is lively and seems to bring out the flavor of the hops. Neither the roasted flavor nor the grapefruit rind flavor muddle each other and work together brilliantly. Again: a very pulled-together flavor. The aftertaste is short and has the bitterness of french roast coffee and bitter chocolate. I love it.

Overall a great porter, nice dark brown color with a creamy coffee colored head. The smokey flavor of the malt is evident right away but not too over powering that it takes away from the rest of the taste.
