A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Whereís the smoked? Try alaskas smoked if you want smoked. This one tastes more like it was aged and brewed with smoke. Finishes of chocolate and coffee, smells of roasting barley.

22 oz bottle. Very dark brown with some red notes. Beige and lacing head. Aroma is a bit fruity, with chocolate and some weak smoked notes. Some espresso coffee bitterness, but mostly sweet with emphasis on chocolate. Semi-dry finish. Surprising light body. Easily drinkable and definitely enjoyable.

22oz Bomber. Surprisingly light cream head, not dark [ish] at all. On the other hand the porter is as dark as it gets, at least with side, back lighting in this room, i canít see through this at all, just some red tinting on the edges of the glassware. Little traces of lace on the way down. This is the "lightest" tasting Stone i can remember [donít remember their Levitation when i tried that before] [and on another note, their Ruination has truly "ruined" me, i need MORE HOPS] Slight coffee smell. Taste is a nice light porter, with a mild smokey flavor. The aftertaste is like coffee almost, the bitterness present is very light.

this beer was disappointing to me. stone usually goes over the top with flavors so i was expecting liquid campfire, not so much. a pretty average porter with a hint of smokiness. pours opague wit a nice head. aroma of chocolate and coffee. nice hop taste and finish but i needed more smoke!

Great looking porter poured from a 22oz bomber. Large frothy head of light brown and lasts most the pint. Dark black/brown appearance with a slight red hue when held to the light. The aroma of this beer is what struck me. Heavy malt and molasses/roasted chocolate and virtually no hop aroma but did detect a bit of bread/dough. Smokey smell was light, I expected it heavier and it would have been invited.

Unfortunately, this smoked porter did not live up to the aroma for me. Albeit a great beer, it had a lightly sweet initial flavor but I was struck immediately with fair bitter taste with a hint of smoke. Exceptional medium to full body with a pleasant carbonation and dry yet creamy texture. As I drank I felt it finished even more bitter and it lasted quite some time on my palate. Would surly drink again but not something I will stock in my beer fridge. A little acidic/bitter for my taste, would go great with a hearty meal.

22 oz bottle: My thanksgiving beer! Aroma is chocolate, coffee, malts, smoke, caramel, and a bit of roasty goodness. Appearance is a black pour with a fluffy tan head that lingers around for a while. Taste is espresso like with chocolate and roasted coffee coming to the forefront and the smoke lingering on to the back end of the brew. Palate is bitter, lively, and nice and long. Overall, Itís a good porter rather subdued but drinkable all the same.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2007 Canít really get myself to take a liking to porters too much I guess. This receives high ratings, I disagree. . . . Iíll save the supply for those who enjoy it. But, nonetheless, I canít say its a bad beer just b/c Iím not the biggest fan of the style.
