COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2014 Re-rate 6/4/12: Bottle sample at beerandbeyond farewell tasting at Daganís place. Thanks beerandbeyond. Dark brown with a beige head. Roasted malt, smoke, meat. Very smoky finish. 7/4/7/3/14=3.5

Re-rate 2/12: Bottle sample at a Stouts & Porters blind tasting at Sar HaMashkaot Ramat Gan. 2 months after BBD. Very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of roasted grains, a bit of coffee and light smoked wood notes. Sweetish roasty flavor with light acidity, continues drier, finishes bitter. Medium-bodied. 6/3/6/3/12=3

(11/3/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Escondido. Transparent dark brown color. Aroma of roasted malt, some smoked meat and a bit of coffee. Malty flavor with some smoke, roastiness and some chocolate hints. Medium-bodied. 7/3/7/3/14=3.4

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2009 The aroma is of chocolate, dried apples, beech wood, faint sulphur, coffee, seaweed, sugar and spciy/herbal hops. Smooth taste with a lot raisins and beech wood showing up. Sweet. Very faintly smoky. Decent bitterness. Poor lacework. Some seaweed sneaking in. Pleasant. A bit sour. Medium bodied. Residual sugars, beech wood and caramel in the finish. A bit dissapointing. Thanks a lot nearbeer!

Crushed with Jakebra. Little transparent. Definitely not dark enough. Creamy, full mouthfeel. Strange that itís smoked, because the smokiness is subdued. Most smoked I look for bacon flavor. Not here, but itís also pretty damn good, so I canít hold that against it too much.

A rather good porter with a bit of smokey flavor. Hints of chocolate, licorice, some dark fruit. Very enjoyable.

Bottle Pours a deep almost black with a big tan creamy head. The head lasts pretty well. Has a very subtle aroma of caramel, and a smokey burntness. Has a slightly mustiness about it. Has a very mild taste. Definetly can feel the smoked part. Nice mouthfeel , low carbination and a touch watery. Blending is fairly good. Lacks some depth but is a pretty good beer.

Eye-wateringly expensive bottle at The Penguinís Arms. Handsome jet pour collared with beige, collapsing to a marbled slick in swigs. Nose notably soft and lactic; mellow in the hop department with soap and blackcurrant but mostly milk chocolate, walnut, vegetal locust bean notes, alcohol, prune at a push. Caramel and soft casky tones in there. Sweet and lactic like a Belgian dubbel, but not especially porter-like and certainly not smoked or even roasty. A typical English mild of half the strength is charred to a cinder compared to this. Thick black milk with barely a tickle of fizz, luxurious creaminess; soapy alkaline licks. Slippery, heavy and a bit tiring after half a bottle, Considerably less hop and malt excitement than I was expecting. Chocolate, milky coffee, caramel and oak creaminess; wood, slate and boredom. Overall impression: dull and silky like Chimay, drank over a pint and hardly noticed.

Pours to a high foamy head, dissolves well to leave a webby film. Slightly smoky aroma, but not too strong. Nice and dark. Donít fast too much of the chocolate, almost more like a dark hazelnut, good malty mouthfeel. Not too much movement on the palate, but a decent finish. Good stuff.

Pours a little darker than cola. Off white head thins down slightly but stays on the glass until the beer is gone. Citrus hops, roast, and a hint of smoke in the nose. Flavor is complex. Itís got a mild sweetness with roasted malt, a bit of bitterness, a little smoke and alcohol. I would have liked a little more mouthfeel, but this is fine as-is. Thereís just enough body to let the flavors linger.

Bottle @ BA Jšrntorget. Pours reddish brown with thin white head. Looks pretty light and pale. The aroma is small and soft. Vanilla, caramelly and fudgelike. Weak body. Low hops, and leaning on a grainy, caramelly malt base. Almost no smoke flavor. Dry finish.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2003 Sort of roasty and full of chocolate/coffee malt. Pretty bitter. Not all that smoky, really, despite the name. My favorite Stone beer.
