A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

22oz Bomber. Surprisingly light cream head, not dark [ish] at all. On the other hand the porter is as dark as it gets, at least with side, back lighting in this room, i can’t see through this at all, just some red tinting on the edges of the glassware. Little traces of lace on the way down. This is the "lightest" tasting Stone i can remember [don’t remember their Levitation when i tried that before] [and on another note, their Ruination has truly "ruined" me, i need MORE HOPS] Slight coffee smell. Taste is a nice light porter, with a mild smokey flavor. The aftertaste is like coffee almost, the bitterness present is very light.

Bottle, chris_o shindig. Dark ruby with some hints of brown, large tan head. Espresso and dark chocolate nose, much the same in mouth. Some hints of burnt charcoal. Lasts sweet on the palate. Alright.

This is a decent porter but you really have to look for the smoke. This beer is classified as a "porter’ not a "smoked", so I think the name is just downright confusing. All in all though, like I said, it’s a nice porter.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2008 I used to like this beer a lot more. I think the production was kicked up to pay for the $13M Bistro & Gardens so they had to take a lot less time and care with their flagship beers. This is one casualty.

Light smoked aroma and dark body. Roasted malt body with faint smoke undertone. Light body.

Very interesting beer. A lot of malty character - coffee and chocolate. The smokiness is so subtle that it almost tastes like a rich porter bring drunk by a campfire. Finishes bittery-smooth...and very warm.

Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in an English pint glass. This porter poured a dark brown with a two-finger thick head of slowly fading tan foam that settled into a thin, creamy, lasting layer. Heavy lacing covered the sides of the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of very mild chocolate, vanilla, and a bit of smoke. The flavor consisted of a subltle blend of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and roasted malts. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and creamy smooth with mild carbonation. Very tasty and smooth without the harsh, dry coffee bitterness displayed in other porters. Not enough smoke, though!

Bomber. Notes are from memory. This was sweeter than the Alaskan Porter drank side by side and did not show much smokiness at all. A soft but weighty palate with a sweet midpalate.

Bottle. Black pour, thin light tan head with a few bubbles popping around that dissipates quickly. Not much of an aroma. Nice sweet taste with perhaps a hint of smoke. Not nearly as smoky as the Alaskan smoked porter (which just preceded the stone in my tasting) very close to a standard porter.
