COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Pours out a dark brown color with a light tan head, leaving pretty good retention and some lacing. Aroma is roasted with a little bit of chocolate, some caramel too. Some caramel in the taste, I definately get roastiness but the smokiness is very subdued. Medium bodied with fairly high carbonation. Pretty easy to drink beer, I’d probably have it again, but wouldn’t seek it out.

Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is coffee, smoke, chocolate. Flavor is mostly coffee and bitter chocolate, with smoke flavor present in moderation. Finishes clean, but leaves a bit of smokey aftertaste.

22oz bottle, dark brown color, with a creamy tan-colored, leaving laces, toasty, caramel, mild roasted malt, fruity, light smoky nose, with some hints of black coffee, dark chocolate, with a sweet molasses accent, and a peaty aroma folows through on a medium-bodied palate with a sweet toasted, roasted malt, fruity character, with a mild smoky flavor, with a hint of ashy beechwood, with some molasses, chocolatey, liquorice accents, leading towards a mlaty, fruity, roasty bitterness finish. I thought it was much smokier than that.

Bottle from a box ordered from Beers of Europe, consumed and shared with Loz 31-01-09 Pours dark brown with a tan head. There is a nice smokiness (as you would expect) that is immediately present on the nose and then in the mouth. There are some burnt malts, its a little fruity but surprisingly I find this just a touch thin, its nice but just a little bit lacking somewhere. A6 A4 F6 P3 OV13 3.2

Pours a rich, dark brown. Aroma is strong of smoke and dark malts. Notes of chocolate and caramel stand out as well. On the palate it is smooth and creamy. The taste is really stong in smoke. The finish is a bit dry leaving an after taste of sweet burnt malts and smoke. A little too much smoke for me, but still alright. I could not drink more than one in an evening.

Not a great deal of "smokiness" in this Rauchbier, however, it was pleasant to drink with roasted coffee and semi-sweet chocolate dominate in the flavor and aroma. Dark brown body with tan head. Not bad.

Fairly potent smoked aroma coming forth, with just a hint of sweetness behind it. Pours dark ruby, with a huge tan head. The smoke is present in the flavor, and is a fairly strong characteristic, but there is the roasted notes there, as well as some dark fruit. Not my favorite style. But good example of the style, as well as something I wish to cook with.

Big brown-beige lasting head. Barely translucent dark red body. Resiny chocolatey aroma with vinegary notes. Dry-acidic chocolate and charcoal smoke taste with milky resiny notes. Mild mouthfeel. Fullish body. Dry resiny roasty aftertaste with long lingering chocolate notes. Chocolatey charcoal smoke taste lingers. Much milder than expected, but certainly nice and drinkable. Feels like it has a light infection; need to rerate. (0.65l bottle at Olympen, Oslo.)

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2010 Bottle @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours a medium-toned brown/black body with a thin, white head. Smell is soft smoke-peaty tones with some dark malt sweetness in the background. Taste is mild dark malts, some roasted undertones and hints of earth and caramel. The smoke gets around your palate first when the aftertaste hits you, a nice surprising touch as you keep feeling for that smoked aroma all the way through the sip. A bit watery; this would’ve been truly great as an imperial stout version. Regardless, this is a well-crafted beer from Stone Brewing.

A lot more mellow than I thought it was going to be. The smokiness was well balanced and understated. Smooth and easy to drink with a rich coffee / chocolate presence.
