COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Maybe my bottle was old, but this beer lacked any flavor, and it didn’t seem quite smoked to me. I will stick to Stones other brews.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2003 Sort of roasty and full of chocolate/coffee malt. Pretty bitter. Not all that smoky, really, despite the name. My favorite Stone beer.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2003 Another fine creation from the folks at Stone. Mellow, smooth and chalked full of character. Subtle sweetness followed by hearty roasted malts and a dash of smokeyness. Head was persistant and the languid liquid dark and inviting. However the last several drinks began to taste like my grampa's old cough medicine. You know, like molasses, vicks rub and rusty nails. I'm sure this is due to the hoppy overtones not quite characteristic of this style. Regardless, the overall experience was positive.

Dark ruby color with a medium creamy tan head. A bitter(going against what the bottle says, but this is jsut for the aroma) roasted malts with a slight pacific coast hop aroma. Upon warming the hops become more dominate in the aroma and taste. Finish is slightly dry.

A nice opaque color with hints of smoke and chocolate. However, there has always been some kind of conflict in the aftertaste on this beer. Its too funky and subtle. A very nice smoked porter, but average at best for the style. The 6th Anniversary blows this away. Not heavy enough.

The Smoked Porter poured a dark black with a semi-creamy tan head that dissipated rather quickly. Suprisingly, there was not much of an aroma to this beer just a slight malt smell. I wasn't very impressed with the taste either. It had a very bitter, hoppy finish for a porter. As it warmed a roasted malty start became more pronounced. I was expecting a lot from this beer and was pretty disappointed. It wasn't bad, but it was nowhere near what I though it would be. I didn't notice any smokiness in the nose or taste either.

This filled the glass with a rich black brew and a substantial creamy tan head. It comes on more like a Stout than a Porter to me and the flavor profile is dominated by the sharpness contributed by roasted/peated barley. This brew has some aspects of a Stout rather than a Porter, and if you are a Stout lover who doesn't care for Porters, then you will probably enjoy this one. A good beer, but I was a little disappointed. I expected something different mostly.

A little too burnt for me. But still a good one. Nice head, good aroma, and a nice finish.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2003 14Jan2003 Update: After some prodding (from the brewer, no less), I decided to clarify this rating. The beer is not bitter by absolute standards, but it is (in my opinion) over-bittered in the sense that it overwhelms the unique and subtle flavors present in the beer. Re-rate ASAP. <hr> (20Dec2002--22oz bottle) Reading the commercial description, the smokiness of this ’smoked porter’ is indeed subtle. Unfortunately, the hop bitterness of this beer is anything BUT subtle. In what seems to be a recurring theme from this brewer, excessive bitterness undermines what would otherwise be a unique and wonderful beer. The beer is totally opaque. Its head is lumpy, rust-colored, fine-textured, very lacy, and provides a nicely persistent effervescence to the beer. The aroma is surprisingly mild; a little smoky, with some malt and alcohol. Flavor: starts bitter, ends bitter, bitter in the middle. In the midst of the bitterness, I did actually taste wonderful smokiness and tasty roasted malt. The beer has perfect mouthfeel. ’Hop heads’ love this, but I think you can make a pretty convincing argument that the level of bitterness in this beer detracts from its overall quality.

Beer pours (in Chimay glass) a deep black liquid light can nearly penetrate with a fine copper-caramel color that disapates quickly to nothing. Aroma is of molasses, toffee with sweetness. Flavor is a medium to small hop - otherwise nothing. Beer looks great - taste leaves something to be desired. Decent beer - could be better. Maybe this will be my gateway beer to hoppier beers. Don't dream far, though. Sampled at 71 degrees Fahrenheit.
