COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Bottled. This porter pours black with a large fizzy light-brown head. The aroma is malty with only a slight hint of roast and chocolate. Itís heavy and the taste is dominated by a dry roasty coffee flavor.

I was expecting more. The head was long lasting and cream colored, quite thick. The color dark and opaque. The initial flavor was that of the hops, very notable, much like in everything Stone produces, however the malts I felt were completly overshadowed by the hops. I donít really see a reason to go back to this one.

Black pour with a big tan head. Smell is slightly sweet roasty malt and chocolate with a medium level of smokiness reminiscent of smoked meat. Decent mouthfeel, but a bit thin. Smokiness is more subtle than the Aecht schlenkerla beers, but still very much there. Flavor overall aside from smokiness is a bit thin and watery. A bit underwhelming, although not a bad beer. Wouldnít buy again though.

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a big tan head. Has a chocolate malt smell with an essence of smoke. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Taste is of chocolate malts with a very slight smoked quality. Finishes super smooth. Not much smoked flavor here, I was expecting more than was found. Still a pretty decent porter. Oct 2004

I thought this was a decent tasting beer and a good porter, but pretty marginal in its smoked component compared to other smoked porterís Iíve had (Alaskan) or rachbiers. This beer poured a slightly thick black, with a pretty abundant off-white head. Aroma was pretty minimal, but offered up some nice chocolate malt (burned pizza crust) roastiness. Flavor was decently roasty, but not very smokey to my palate (although other folks I split the bottle with disagreed). Mouthfeel was unremarkable. Not a bad beer, but I wasnít hugely impressed by it. Definitely recommended though.

A bit chalky for my taste, and little to no smoke. Could have been sweeter, too. Otherwise, an okay porter from a really good brewing company

The best partís the appearance - itís rather beautiful. The consistency and mouth-feel are also nice, but I find the flavor pretty dull. Dark, smoky, dry: Itís all that, yes... but not strikingly tasty. Extra credit for being from my hometown of San Diego, though. :)

Bomber. Extremely fizzy, literally 90% head. Something wrong with this bottle maybe? I found the nose to be relatively tight, maybe a little caramel. After a few minutes the head settled to reveal a nice black color. The first thing that came to my mind when i tasted it was smoked bacon. There is a hint of sweet malt and coffee but the smoke dominates. I think there was something off with this bottle though.

As Stone is as of yet unavailable in my state (NC), I must continue to seek it out when visiting friends abroad (VA). As this particular offering I found to be averagish-good, Iím not sorely lamenting its absence at my LBS...yet it was still worth trying to be sure.

Appearance: Coca-cola, pure and simple

Aroma: Weak smoke permeates all else.

Taste: Smoky porter! An American take on an English style mixed with Rauchbier.

Overall, itís a one-trick pony, not especially smoky (but then again I love Rauchbier). I kinda dig it -- one caveat, though, if youíre not into the smoky beer thing, donít bother with this one!
