3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
"Smoke Beer Out" Meaning a marathon of smoked beers in one evening. October 14, Taster #4 of 6. 22z bottle. Brownish-opaque. Tan head with large bubbles. Light roasted coffee notes. Caramel, sugar, little if any smoke flavor. Dark roasted coffee flavor, and very hop driven. Tasty flavor, but the name is misleading...Then I read the commercial description! Whoops! I guess if I had this beer earlier, I might have liked it better.

Bottle, courtesy of Quintana. Black color with tan head. Aromas of dark malt, dark fruit, and faint stale cigar smoke. Flavor is mostly a nice dark porter, somewhat dry, but the smoke ends up tasting like, quoth Quintana, "the butt end of a cigar." Agreed. I just couldnít get into this one-- the smoke really seemed out of place and an unpleasant side-note to an otherwise fine porter. Iíll have my smoke from the cigar and my porter from the beer, thank you. Oh well, it gets a 3 because I _believe_ in Stone....

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark pour with a ruby red tinge and a medium roasted tan head. Big, dark chocolatey aroma with a hint of pepperminty coffee. Light, almost creamy texture with a lot of roasted malts and just a hint of smokiness. Surprisingly thin and easy drinking. The smoky elements are most noticable on the final smack, which brings back horrible memories of Marlboro Lights. Flavors are initially tasty, but not complex enough to warrant outstanding scores from me, and the finish is kind of killer. There isnít much more than the commercial description reveals.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
pours black and muddy good light brown head. Aroma is lightly toasted malts, moderate pine and grapefruit esters. Flavor is moderatly bitter which seems out of character for this style, ends with a long bitter finish. Light to medium bodied mouth feel was dissapointing, watery and lively carbonates. Too hoppy and fizzy for style, Grapefruit hoppiness a bit much.

10-16-07 bottle. Ink black with great head and lacing. Smells of smoked ham and jerky - not as strong as some smoked beers - but is there nonetheless. I have trouble with liquids that smell or taste like meat - call me crazy. Overly smoked taste for my liking. However, the mouthfeel is great. Maybe someday I will be able to appreciate that smoked smell and taste - but today is just not that day.

Not that great. Surprisingly light bodied and weak. Some sweetness and smoke to it. Roasted malt flavor as well. Watery, sweet finish.

Bottle. Pours ebony with a good amount of transparency around the edges where the brew thins. A nice abundant tan head forms and lasts for some time. The aroma isnít strong at all. I notice some cocoa, vanilla, smoke, and a little bit of wood. But it took me a few times of pressing my nose into the mouth of the glass. The initial flavour is mildly chocolaty with hints of wood, and a bit of vanilla and brown sugar. The brew passing causes me to think, "watery," as it has that similar feeling in your mouth when you drink unfiltered tap water. Hm, thatís not exactly a quality that I like. The smoked and wood notes start to creep in. The smoked notes seem to mix nicely with the chocolate flavour. Though, the feeling of the unfiltered tap water just doesnít seem to go away. All in all, this is okay. Itís drinkable. But far from impressive.

Bottle: Very dark brown almost black pour with a nice thick off white head that went thin after sitting for a minute. First scent is of liquid smoke and a dark chocolate. Similar in taste as well.
