A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Very dark brown with red highlights. An active light tan head. The aroma is roasted peanuts and cooked green beans. The taste is a full toasted bread crust and light tobacco. There is also some roasted and salted peanut shell. The smoke is lightly hidden in the aftertaste. This really smooths out as you go along. However, the slightly soapy finish still detracts.

Bottled. This porter pours black with a large fizzy light-brown head. The aroma is malty with only a slight hint of roast and chocolate. It’s heavy and the taste is dominated by a dry roasty coffee flavor.

I was expecting more. The head was long lasting and cream colored, quite thick. The color dark and opaque. The initial flavor was that of the hops, very notable, much like in everything Stone produces, however the malts I felt were completly overshadowed by the hops. I don’t really see a reason to go back to this one.

Quick thankyou to Kook for lobbing this one back from the U.S., amongst others. Served up at backyard patio temperature at a small tasting here in Perth. It was getting late as we cracked this one.
Poured a deepest ruby brown, quite bright, sparkling in the lights but with no visible carbonation. Head rose, fell, did not last long, given the film on my glass at this stage I was not surprised. Sweetish, leathery, tar and marmite nose with a feint whiff of next day bonfire. First mouthful establishes some very dusty chocolate malts. From the next a sharp, resinous and acridly grassy ’twang’ spreads across the palate tainting what could be a decent beer. A good edge of rough pasty dark malts counteract bringing it back in the aftertaste. Smoke begins to linger also somehow balancing it out and making it pleasant despite the raspy sharp edge. Excellent length and a lovely smoothness adds points. The body itself not big, but it atleast holds ground. This wasn’t too bad a drop, just nothing special to merit a high score. Sessionable, I suppose. (1 pint, 6 Fl.Oz, age unknown)

Bottle at NB - Porter/stout ølsymposium. Black - big brown fluffy head. Light smoked, licorice, roasted, light metalliic, bread. Very mild. Would go nicely to a piece ofryebread with smoked-sausage.
