A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2003 14Jan2003 Update: After some prodding (from the brewer, no less), I decided to clarify this rating. The beer is not bitter by absolute standards, but it is (in my opinion) over-bittered in the sense that it overwhelms the unique and subtle flavors present in the beer. Re-rate ASAP. <hr> (20Dec2002--22oz bottle) Reading the commercial deScription, the smokiness of this ísmoked porterí is indeed subtle. Unfortunately, the hop bitterness of this beer is anything BUT subtle. In what seems to be a recurring theme from this brewer, excessive bitterness undermines what would otherwise be a unique and wonderful beer. The beer is totally opaque. Its head is lumpy, rust-colored, fine-textured, very lacy, and provides a nicely persistent effervescence to the beer. The aroma is surprisingly mild; a little smoky, with some malt and alcohol. Flavor: starts bitter, ends bitter, bitter in the middle. In the midst of the bitterness, I did actually taste wonderful smokiness and tasty roasted malt. The beer has perfect mouthfeel. íHop headsí love this, but I think you can make a pretty convincing argument that the level of bitterness in this beer detracts from its overall quality.

deep brown, light brown head, mostly not lasting. aroma is lightly chocolatey, donít really detect any roast, some chalkiness. flavor is virtually the same with a lightly to moderately hopped finish. mouthfeel is fairly substantial. i was shocked that the smoke is barely detectable in the aroma and undetectable in the flavor. while i think schlenkerla beers are somewhat overly smoked, this beer is undersmoked for the style. However, this is still a good porter, just not really what i would call a smoked porter.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2004 Smells chocolatey and sweet with hints of smoke and coffee. Deep brown color with a decent tan head. Tastes sweet and rich with flavors of burnt cocoa. Finishes slightly bitter with a kiss of hops. Not smokey enough for the style in my opinion.

Where the fuck did they put the smoke in this beer? I couldnt find it for sure... Roasty aroma, some licorice. Almost black body, medium tan head. Roasty flavor, some chocolate, but no fuckin smoke. I want Schlenkerla-smoke in this beer!

Very dark brown with red highlights. An active light tan head. The aroma is roasted peanuts and cooked green beans. The taste is a full toasted bread crust and light tobacco. There is also some roasted and salted peanut shell. The smoke is lightly hidden in the aftertaste. This really smooths out as you go along. However, the slightly soapy finish still detracts.

Bottled. This porter pours black with a large fizzy light-brown head. The aroma is malty with only a slight hint of roast and chocolate. Itís heavy and the taste is dominated by a dry roasty coffee flavor.

I was expecting more. The head was long lasting and cream colored, quite thick. The color dark and opaque. The initial flavor was that of the hops, very notable, much like in everything Stone produces, however the malts I felt were completly overshadowed by the hops. I donít really see a reason to go back to this one.

Opaque black colour, tan head. Very smoky aroma. Even smokier flavour with a kick of alcohol. Very minor malts.
