COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Bottled. Coffe flavour. Very bitter. Bit dryish. Brown colour. Bit simplified and not very full. Nutty. Not at all amazed.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2008 Bottle that was a few monthís past itís enjoy by date. It poured black with a tan head that was gone within 2 minutes. It smelled like someone lit a campfire in the distance. I could really taste the smokiness.

Pours dark black with a nice, foamy brown head. Beautiful, steady, permanent lacing that lingers down the glass. Great looking beer in the glass. Smells of weak malts -- no smokiness, no chocolate, nothing else. Very disappointing aroma. Flavor is lots of chocolate, ironically not very smokey at all. Digging deeper there is some dark fruit there. Thereís a bit of a watery character to the beer as well. Unusually weak brew from Stone. Other reviews on this site rave, but I didnít come away with a great experience from this beer.

Apologetically dissapointed. I was expecting bliss here. The aroma was faint and the smokiness was fainter. I hope over-refrigeration was not the culprit. The flavors were present but so mild it was difficult to finish.

Poured from the bottle, this is a very dark, intense brown with not a lot of foam. In this sample, the nose is not distinctive other than a slight muskiness Ė I wonder is this oneís been on the store shelf too long. Although the finish does deliver a somewhat smoky taste, itís characterized by a thin finish and bitter aftertaste, rather uncomplicated. I agree with lj6880 that this presents like a black lager.

Taste was mainly bitter with some coffee notes and very light smoke. I think the "smoke" did more to just make the other flavors more mild than to really add much in the way of smoky flavor. Not that thatís a bad thing, but it wasnít really what I expected or was looking for.

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: A good bit of carbonation in this one. Black color. Three fingers of frothy/creamy light tan head. Retention is good and sparse irregular lacing is left. 3.5 S: Iím a bit disappointed with the amount of smoke in this. I expected something a bit more badass from Stone. Anyway, it still smells good. Chocolate with a moderate neutral malt sweetness. A touch of graininess. Smoke is subdued, but it does add a touch of bacon. If this was 10X stronger, it be damn good. 3.0 T: This is a well crafted brew, but it isnít very exciting. Subtle chocolate, subtle roast, and a subtler smoke. The strongest flavor is neutral malt sweetness. 4.0 M: Despite a medium body, this has a lot of creaminess. Good moderate carbonation. Very nice here. 3.5 D: Stone was one of my first loves, but ever since drinking the beers of hundreds of breweries, they donít seem too impressive anymore. Sometimes I wish I had an undeveloped palate again. In any case, this is a tasty, easy drinker. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-25-2012 23:59:06

A decent porter although will not purchase again when there are so many better porters available. Taste is more enjoyable then their vanilla bean version.

Got this beer at the tobacco shop in Savannah so freshness is questionable. Dark brown with frothy tan head that settles and stays with great lacing. Smells smoky and like dark coffee. Has some of the coffee/chocolate of a porter but I get mainly smoke which I don't like very much. Full mouthfeel that is good for style. Don't think I like smoked beers. Consumed at Vernon's poker night 9-8-12. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
