2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: AUG 10, 2008 Bottle that was a few monthís past itís enjoy by date. It poured black with a tan head that was gone within 2 minutes. It smelled like someone lit a campfire in the distance. I could really taste the smokiness.

Pours dark black with a nice, foamy brown head. Beautiful, steady, permanent lacing that lingers down the glass. Great looking beer in the glass. Smells of weak malts -- no smokiness, no chocolate, nothing else. Very disappointing aroma. Flavor is lots of chocolate, ironically not very smokey at all. Digging deeper there is some dark fruit there. Thereís a bit of a watery character to the beer as well. Unusually weak brew from Stone. Other reviews on this site rave, but I didnít come away with a great experience from this beer.

Apologetically dissapointed. I was expecting bliss here. The aroma was faint and the smokiness was fainter. I hope over-refrigeration was not the culprit. The flavors were present but so mild it was difficult to finish.

Taste was mainly bitter with some coffee notes and very light smoke. I think the "smoke" did more to just make the other flavors more mild than to really add much in the way of smoky flavor. Not that thatís a bad thing, but it wasnít really what I expected or was looking for.

The one Stone beer I do not like. When they say smoked porter they mean SMOKED. It is too smoky for my tastes. It is a great beer to look at and it can blend well with other beers such as the stone pale but by itself it is very smoky.

Amber color. Medium thickness. Nice coffee-colored head. Thin lace. Alcohol smell. Fruity tasting. Raising. Alcohol on the back end. Overall disappointing compared to other porters (Fullerís London and Samuel Smithís Taddy, for example) that rate as highly on RateBeer.

This is only the second smoked porter, or beer for that matter that I have tried. This smoked porter *PALES* in comparison to the Alaskan Brewing Co. smoked porter. The "smokiness" is hardly present at all. The color, head, aroma and taste are "decent". Iím certainly glad it was half the price of the Alaska Brewing Co.ís smoked porter...It certainly tastes like half the beer the AK brewing does.

You gotta be careful with smoked malts-- itís very easy to overload them into a brew and end up with beer that tastes like itís being served in an ashtray. Stone Smoked Porter eases back the throttle on the burnt roastiness, presenting a good porter that just so happens to also give off a bongwater finish. Look, Iím trying to be objective, but smoked beers have yet to rub my rhubarb the right way. Stoneís Smoked Porter serves as the best example of the style Iíve come across, but I still donít like it very much. The smokiness only grows as the beer warms, and eventually the beer turns my burps into charcoal briquettes. (2008)
