COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2013 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of smoke/ashes and vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Rated in the same session as the Vanilla and Chipotle versions. Simple, ordinary nose with almost no smoke character. Overly bitter/stark in the mouth, and a bit dirty tasting too. Overall a pretty average beer.

This beer was very thick and oily. Highly viscous. Slightly tart, tangy and sour. Bitterness abounds. Not as good as I was hoping.

Nice dark brown colour. Round and mild start with notes of roasted coffee. Mild flavour with hints of chocolate. Quite sweet finish. Aftertaste lacks the smoked notes one would expect to find in a ísmoked porterí. Rather disappointing.

Iíve had a lot of Porters; I really love the brew style...and after the other Stone offerings Iíve had I expected greatness out of this brew. I was actually quite disappointed. Mildly smokey, but thatís what they intended to do from the label. Itís just not really that good, the balance felt a bit off, perhaps the local porters Iím used to are just that good.

Bottled. Coffe flavour. Very bitter. Bit dryish. Brown colour. Bit simplified and not very full. Nutty. Not at all amazed.

750 mL bottle. Pours black body with brown head. Smells extremely roasty and something else. Taste is great if you like porters - not a big fan personally.

Bomber. Pours a deep brownish black with a fairly thin head. Light roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate but much less smoke on the nose and palate than I anticipated. Medium bodied with an ok mouth feel. This one is only my second smoke brew so I donít have much to compare and contrast yet, but the Alaskan Smoked Porter is far superior to this beer.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2008 Bottle that was a few monthís past itís enjoy by date. It poured black with a tan head that was gone within 2 minutes. It smelled like someone lit a campfire in the distance. I could really taste the smokiness.

Pours dark black with a nice, foamy brown head. Beautiful, steady, permanent lacing that lingers down the glass. Great looking beer in the glass. Smells of weak malts -- no smokiness, no chocolate, nothing else. Very disappointing aroma. Flavor is lots of chocolate, ironically not very smokey at all. Digging deeper there is some dark fruit there. Thereís a bit of a watery character to the beer as well. Unusually weak brew from Stone. Other reviews on this site rave, but I didnít come away with a great experience from this beer.

Apologetically dissapointed. I was expecting bliss here. The aroma was faint and the smokiness was fainter. I hope over-refrigeration was not the culprit. The flavors were present but so mild it was difficult to finish.
