3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bomber, $5 @ Lemon Tree. Robust. Yep, that’s about the way to describe it. Pours a big, robust deep brown with a big slightly tan head. Nice peat smokiness up front in the nose, and it segues right into the taste. Malts show in a little later; a nice coffee roast that’s still wedged in behind the smoke. Some malt stickiness starts to build on my lip. Taste is nice and rich, but it makes clear the alcohol is no stronger than any mass beer. Nice to sit with at the end of the day, with some sausage or an ice cream dessert. I tried it with a PB&J as suggested on the bottle. That works too, but I wouldn’t serve that at a beer pairing.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap @ Beer Temple, sample size. Very dark color, but not quite black/opaque. Frothy, light beige head. Aroma’s: light smoke, light roasted, very mild really. Retronasal there’s a bit more to it: smokey, roasted malts. Flavor is roasted, hardly sweet. Light bodied. Finishes with light tar, moderate bitter.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650 mL bottle. Decent looking beer, with a sticky tan head. A little smoke in the nose, but the aroma is fairly mild. It’s subtle in the flavour as well, appearing at the start and lingering in the finish. In between, it’s more typical porter flavours, although it’s not as roasty as some. It is, however, more bitter in the finish than most. Not sure what to think of that. It feels like a hoppy bitterness, rather than from roasted malt.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown pour with a fine tan head. Smells like dark cherries, roasted grains, a bit of whiskey, peat, smoke. The taste is bitter, with notes of peat, smoke, dark cherries and dark chocolate. Silky smooth texture with medium body and a bitter and smoky aftertaste.
LE: when the beer gets warmer, one can identify other notes: funky sour notes in the nose, together with caramel, and the taste also contains notes of caramel and a bit of vanilla. Pretty complex beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rated from old notes. A California porter with a rich smokey taste. This is not a pronounced smokiness like Schlenkerla, but much more subdued. Chocolate undertones. Aftertaste reminds more of a milk stout than a porter. Very good.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Fairly pronounced smokiness in the aroma but the taste is really where the smoked malt comes through. Very smooth, black pour with a quickly dissipating tan head.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a bottle. Deep brown, not quite opaque, with a medium head of tan foam. Medium to thin body. Not much of an aroma. Medium carbonation. Slightly bitter and harsh with just a hint of smoke. Not very smooth, flavorful or refreshing. Not that enjoyable, somewhat disappointing. Could have been a little thick, smoother, with bolder flavors.
