3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from On the Fly Gasmart. Pours out almost true black, big beige, airy head, subsides quickly. Aroma is more roast grain than rye, but some grain sourness is present. Taste is where the rye comes into its own, funky, sour, musty, backed up with some burnt toast, roast grain bitterness. Finishes fast and clean, body is light like a kolsch. Nicely done.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Originally rated on 6/7/14. Black with ruby highlights and a thick cap of tan foam. Dark malt aroma, a little burnt and roasted with bitter chocolate, faint hop character. Soft on the palate, light bodied with modest carbonation, smooth and a bit dry from the dark grains. Malty with moderate bitterness up front, chocolate and a hint of toffee/hops mid-palate, finishing on the bitter side. Lingering citrus/lemon bitterness. Overall, it was pretty decent, didnt even taste like a kolsch.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The kolsch style is really overshadowed in this mix. Roasted and rye aromas. Nice dark color like a black IPA. Full palate and dark malt earthy flavors with some spice from the rye. Good hop finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz bottle; date almost entirely rubbed off. Pours black with a tan head. Raisin and brown sugar aroma, a little chocolate buried in there. Flavor is more roasty, molasses, and cocoa. However old it is, it’s a pretty tasty lighter beer, kind of in the vein of an improved Dry Stout.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Smell of roasted malt, tar. Very dark brown colour, brown head. Aroma of ash, coffee, chocolate, a faint of vanilla. Not so roasted flavour as the colour and smell would imply. Bitter, but also mid sweet. Velvety texture, mid-light body.

Pours a deep dark brown with a nice tan head. Grainy aroma with roasted malt and baker’s chocolate notes. The flavor is balanced with burnt sugar, roasted barely, chocolate, and some earthy spiciness. Light body, medium carbonation, and a smooth mouthfeel. Enjoyable, easy drinker.
