3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeTheYounger (1101) - Claremont, California, USA - SEP 20, 2012On tap at Stone Pasadena Pre-Opening. Color is dark brown with a redish hue and with a small thin beige head. Aroma is fresh hops with chocolate and espresso and a hint of spice. Taste is initial espresso and finishes a little bit bitter. The body is a little thin (like my girlfriend). Overall a nice twist to Sublimely.

Draft at Tustin Brewing. Pours a deep black with little to no tan head. Aroma is licorice, slight espresso and cocoa. Taste is more licorice that overwhelms and makes this barely drinkable. The espresso beans don’t really work here for me and the hops aren’t really here to help it out.

On draft at Dark Lord Day. Looks good; cola with light beige lacing. Smells solid; hoppy and malty with a nice espresso influence. Tastes like it smells, but the roast is too bitter. Kind of unbalanced. I like the base better.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2013 Draft. Dark brown. Big creamy beige head, lasting. Expresso, chocolate, hops. Smooth bitter finish. Great coffee character and definitely doesnt take a backseat. I really enjoy beers that use coffee well and this is a winner. Rich and flavorful.

Draft at Dark Lord Day. Wow. Wasn’t too sure about adding coffee to a black ipa, but I love self-righteous ale, so I gave it a shot. Definitely give it a try if you find it.

Tap at Churchkey during CBC. Poured a deep dark rich color with a slightly tan head. Aromas were malty notes, some herbal hop character wrapped around a LOT of coffee notes. Flavor was bitter coffee, malts, plenty of fresh tasting hop character. Really enjoyed this one.

Black pour with a finger of tan head. Kind of an old coffee aroma which is a bit acidic. Spicy, has almost a pepper note, lots of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and grassy hops. Mild grapefruit and pineapple. The flavor is heavy on the chocolate, roasted malt, and old coffee notes. A bit acidic, mild bitterness, pine, grapefruit, and grass. Light molasses sweetness.

On tap at brewery. Black with a short lived creamy tan head. Bitter sweet chocolate, coffee, and citrus aroma. Kick you in the teeth coffee grounds taste up front followed by a bitter bite and finishing with light chocolate covered citrus flavors and a lingering dry bitterness. Not bad.
