Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

I was so happy that Stone decided to make this a regular brew, as I loved the XIth anniversary beer. Pours near black with a small tan head. Aroma is citrusy, piney hop with notes of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is big huge bitter citrusy hop with nice floral and piney notes as well as a little roastiness and a big bitter finish. Very good. The aged actual XIth anniversary bottles are showing even better (they still have some at liquor barn springhurst in Louisville)

500 mL bottle into tulip. Pours a deep brown almost black with a two-finger tan head that has good retention and leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is very powerful: lots of dark fruits, prunes, molasses, dark chocolate, strawberries, and big grapefruit hops that makes for an odd combination like a Belgian Strong Ale and IPA combined. Taste is just that: refreshing grapefruit hops are most prominent but as this warms it becomes more about dates, prunes and then moves to coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, and some smokiness. I really haven’t tried a black IPA before, this is the closest to it and I find it fascinating.

A very dark pour, almost a ’dark ipa’ in its own way. The smell has strong notes of green vegetables like bruseel sprouts. The simco hops are prevalent in both the smell and the initial taste, however they are very well balanced so as not to be too bitter on the palate. This is an excellent hoppy beer. Another stone classic.

Sweet Jesus, this is a good beer. On tap into a tulip glass. Pours black with a thick tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Absolutely beautiful beer. Aroma is lots of pine and citrus hops. Flavor is very hop-forward, but mellows into nice caramel sweetness. Full, thick, viscous mouthfeel. Basically, this beer has the look and mouthfeel of a very nice stout with the aroma and flavor of a good DIPA. What’s not to love?

Poured from Bottle into Tulip glass. Pours jet black with a booming, fluffy light-tan head that never fully dissolves and creates a dense layer atop the glass. The aroma is filled with sticky, resinous hops and has some hints, although very subtle, of chocolate. Flavor is piney hops and sweet malt upfront and is accompanied by some touches of roasted malt and dried fruit. Its a medium bodied beer that is sticky and has a good amount of carbonation. Out of all the "Black" IPA’s that I’ve tried this one certainly sets the bar. I had no idea what this beer looked like before I poured it into my glass and was surprised it was as black as it was. The aroma is purely delicious.

On Tap at City Beer: Pours black with white head. Nose is pine, hops, and chocolate. Palate is just right, extremely easy drinking. Hoppy makes me happy and this one made me happy. Recommended.

On tap at Stone Bistro. Appears dark brown with a cream-colored head – just a shade lighter than your average stout. Aroma is brightly floral with a hint of black-ashy malt. Lemonade and bubblegum come to mind in the nose. The palate is medium-light, allowing this ale to swish easily over one’s tongue. Self-Righteous starts with a blend of floral hops and “crème brulee” (a toasted/caramel blend of flavors). The finish is indeed quite bitter and clean-tasting, with some late smoke. Overall, this is a pretty interesting concoction, much like Southern Tier’s Iniquity but better. It is a fantastic drinking experience for its ability to shock you with the juxtaposition of black coloration and floral, IPA like body. Reminded me of a black Arrogant Bastard with a bit more smoke! update on Stone 11th Anniversary Ale 11/1/09 notes: bomber. Pours brown with heavy lacing and a beige head. Aroma is dried strawberries, pine, and milk chocolate. Palate is medium, very lightly carbonated. Flavor is a interesting blend, very hard to put a finger on. Piney hops, semisweet dark chocolate, honeydew, dark malt, bubble gum sweetness. Well, I’m not sure if my rating of this beer should affect it’s near-finalized score; it is clearly a hoppy beer that has been matured to its detriment. And I knew that coming in, but it was worth a try. At this point, Sublimely Self Righteous is a way more satisfying black IPA. 3.4.

Great aroma with that slight bit of malt in there. Nice strong IIPA hoppiness in the flavor. Has got slight more bitter finish than I would prefer, but a great all round beer. Would get more if I could find them.
