Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Pours near opaque, but actually very dark cola color when held to light. Off-white head dissipates quickly with a thin rim lace. Nose is a mixture of light fruits, perhaps tropical in nature, and a sweet roasty-doughy component that almost reminds me of a fresh batch of donuts with chocolate icing. Palate offers assertive grapefruity hops up front that bully the palate, with a malt in the background that has long ago submitted to the hop domination. Dark color somewhat betrays the flavor profile in the sense that if you drank it blind I suspect you would just wager that it is a DIPA. Finish is a little tart and the hops pucker the mouth a little too much. Perhaps it needs age, for the drinkability suffers a little right now.

Wonderful black pour with some red undertones. Thin off white head. Aroma of pineapple, grapefruit, soy and some wood. Flavor is pine, chocolate, dried fruit. Wonderful lingering bitterness after a coating mouth feel.

22 oz. bottle from River City Cellars in Richmond. Pours black with a thin tan head; looks like a stout. Aroma of grapefruit, pineapple, and freshly cut grass. I could smell this one all day long if I wasn’t so anxious to drink it. Excellent flavor of tangerine and grapefruit with a nice sweetness on the finish. Every bit as good as I remember the Stone XI being. Top notch.

Growler from brewery. Pours a thick almost opaque black with some brownish hues. Finger and a half of brownish beige head. Really, this looks a whole lot like an imperial stout...until you take a whiff. Great hop aroma of pine with some crisp citrus peel too. More bitter pine along with some grass and citrus in the taste. Initial bitterness mellows and there is a bit of mild caramel sweetness. Medium body and some lingering bitterness. Different, but good.

(Stone 11th Anniversary) Thanks durhambeer for sharing. Pours a dark brown that sits black with a thin light tan head. The nose is sweet, shows some oxidation, some mild hop character. Flavor shows some sweetness, a little chocolaty, age is comin through hard, oxidation, neutral hop bitterness. Some roast on the palate and a medium bitterness. Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Pours a dark brown allowing light and sits black in the glass. Head is one finger thick tan. The aroma is sweet, citrusy hops, some roast character, somewhat enjoyable and intriguing aroma. Flavor is bitter and roasty upfront. Waxy/piny hop feel, some acetaldehyde. Palate is astringent to a degree. Need to try fresh

This is an older bottle of 11th, so take this review somewhat in stride. However, fresh this beer didn’t impress me either as opposed to the vast majority of people. Pours a very dark brown with a fairly hefty tan head. Aroma is of clean American hops - Centennial, Cascade, and Simcoe, as well as some very minor roast lurking behind the hops. Taste is mostly bitterness (now, fresh had a much more grapefruit bouquet), and a touch roasty. Not terribly exciting and I don’t know why they deemed it worthy of being done again. Why not 6th? This isn’t as complex, delicious, or enjoyable as straight Stone IPA, and the mild roastiness clashes with the hops in this case. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but I always applaud them for trying new things.

On tap at Deep Ellum. Body is black with very little light at the corners. A tall creamy tan head had good resiliency and leaves spotty lacing. The nose and initial flavor is full of fresh crisp hops, with citrus peel, grapefruit and watery pine notes. The body feels heavy on the tongue, roasty and malty with lots of toasted nuts and chewy bread, but the hops and the carbonation carry this beer. I sometimes think Stone’s carbonation detracts from the beer, being too lively and acting as a thinning agent on my pallate, but it works to their advantage with this beer and allows the hops to break through the roasty body and come alive. Really nice.
