3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 21, 2008 bottle.....pours a really dark brown with a thin light brown head.....aromas of a multitude of hops with the emphasis on the citrus aspect between them all. just a big aroma overall which is very inviting......to move onto the taste, hmmmmm and i i’m thinking that i like this a lot. more of the tropical fruit like hops with a little bitterness in the finish. there’s a nice caramel malt component that doesn’t play the prominent role but supports the initial pine hop blast accordingly.

Aromatic. Darker than expected. Totally opaque, almost black. Small but good head for this beer. Good balance of roasty malt & bright hop. Punchy.

Murky dark brown. Smells like a good Black Toque. All toasty and leafy, then dark & chewy. Big anise finish. What I like about this is the size and sweetness of the body, it really provides a solid backdrop for the leafy hops.

22 oz bottle. Darkest IPA I have ever seen. Nice color and head. Aromas of citrus and grass. Fruity hopps on the flavor as well. Nice malty backbone to give it that juiciness. Very good.

A fantastic black IPA. Subtly roasted, chocolate notes that become more pungent as the brew warms. Full of hoppy, malty, complex dark notes that will leave your palate wanting more.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a nice tan head on top. This beer pours more like a porter or stout! Aroma is full of pine, citrus, and grapefruit. Flavor is full of pine and grapefruit hops. Very balanced flavor profile with a nice bitterness accompanied with a nice sweetness. A very interesting beer and another good one to celebrate another year with Stone Brewing Co!

Black IPA you say? Interesting. Pours deep brown/light black color. Aroma is strong with grapefruit/citrus/pine. Perfect bitterness and well balanced. This may be my favorite Stone brew yet....on to the Double Bastard!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, Pours a deep dark brown with slight red tints. With a nice lacing brown head that dissipates fairly quickly. Hops dominate ever so slightly over the malts, which are well roasted. Hoppy, a nice hop structure, great bitterness, that also combines with some roast and cereal grains. its quite nice, A good balance. one of my preferred Stone brews. Thanks MrRomero.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Duane shared a bottle of this with me. Thanks Dad! Deep brown pour, 1-finger tan head. Aroma was earthy, licorice, and plenty of citrusy, graprfruit hops. Flavor had some roasty, coffee character to it, but it was also dominated by the hops. This wasn’t bad by any means, but the mixture of a heavily roasted malt base with Stone’s aggressive hop-profile just didn’t work well for me.

A black IPA? I didn’t believe it when I was pouring it, I was sure it would taste like a stout or potter, but nope, it was all IPA all the time. Great hopy/citrus nose, bitter and flowery attack, long finish with malts and hops and dark fruitish flavous.
