Pours mahogany with ample tan head. Aroma is roast, apples, some spice with hints of alcohol. Flavor is a nice balanced strong flavor. Citrus hops, some oak, roastiness, more apples and plum. Nice hop and roast flavor on the finish. This is really drinkable. The alcohol lends minimal heat - but be careful - it’s there alright! Good stuff!

What an excellent beer. I had really suprised my brother with this beer, as it looks like a porter and smells like an IPA. What a gift Stone has brewed for us. Huge aroma of fresh hops, with just a touch of light roast. Appearance is dark brown (nearly black) with a touch of red on the edges and a nice frothy light tan head with the usual Stone staying power. Flavor is big oily hops, citrusy bitterness with enough sweetness to keep it properly balanced. You won’t have to twist my arm to drink the remaining bottles I have.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2008 From bottle, blind tasting at Papsoes - beer no 23. Pours dark brown with a red hue and a dense off-white head. Heavy fruity aroma, peach, grapefruit and a bit of pineapple on top of a dense malt aroma. Dark caramel flavoured with a good portion of sugar. Ends in a great hoppy and malty blend - nice.
From tap at Stone Bistro as hopped with wet Simcoe on cask. Pours pitch black with a lacing tan head. Dense fruity and hoppy aroma, clear has a lot more hops yet also perhaps too dense. Dense hoppy, bone dry yet with a mild caramel malt presence in the flavour. Fruity finish. 8-4-8-4-17=4.1

Pours Opaque Black with a big fluffy light brown head. Good lacing clings to the sides of my tulip glass. Huge Pine hop aroma. Hops are really huge in this beer but does end with a slight roasted malt sweetness. Full oily body. Very nice beer.

Reminds me of double bastard. Not really a stout, more dry, not as heavy palate, but rich in malts and hops. Great, but not outstanding.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2012 Very interesting beer. Seems that those who have kvetched "oh, another aggressively hopped Stone beer" might be missing out. Yes, it is aggressively hopped, but there a very quirky and welcome use of black malts along with the dry-hopping to give this a distinctively bitter taste and looooong, dry finish. Add that to the gorgeous creamy body and palate, and it’s a really lovely left turn from an already excellent brewer.

22oz bottle-pours a creamy light brown head that laces and black color. Aroma is lots of cascade hops. Taste is lots of cascade hops-raw/bitter/resiny, secondary dark malt-ash/chocolate, alcohol. A bit too much for me, comes across as an I2PA/AmSA. Sipping. Ok carbonation.

The Dan Journal #134. Tasted 11/8/07. 22oz bomber. Murky brown hue. Webbed head. Spicy peppery anise celery nose. Great big nose. Big vegetal malts. Coffee acidity. Rye bitter malts. Absolutely fabulous! Mild to moderate bitterness. Peppery and bready. Totally delicious!
