Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Bottle purchased at Friendly Mini Mart in Lakewood. (Have not seen this on at Rozi’s). WARNING: POSSIBLE HOP OVERLOAD AHEAD! Aroma is a bit more hoppy than expected. Not the Bastard’s grapefruit like hop aroma but more of a spicy one, strong in the floral side. Reminds me of Weyerbacher’s Simcoe. The look of this one is surprisingly dark. Very stoutish in appearance. The flavor, that isn’t so stouty. It is wonderfully bitter. Unusual for Stone to make such a bitter beer that doesn’t hurt to drink. The bitterness is just the right level until the finish which just closed it out nicely. In the middle the malt flavor is actually... simple. Not overly done or too one-sided. It just happens to carry the hop flavors just long enough to make this thing wonderful. A typical stone brew.

Poured into a trappist glass from a 22 oz bottle. Looks like a stout – opaque black with a thin tan head that fades to almost nothing, but leaves lacing behind. Aroma dominated by juniper / pine, with malty undertones. Creamy palate that turns slightly fizzy (you feel the carbonation that you can’t see). Bitter cocoa up front transforms into a major piney hop aftertaste. Some smoke flavors emerge as the beer warms. Finishes with lingering medicinal and cherry flavors. A strange combination of flavors, but the ABV is well hidden.

Deep rich brown with minimal head with a coating of hop oil. Heavy but fresh aroma of citrus and piney hops. Clean and very dry finish that goes on and on. The sweetness isn’t apparent until after a few sips when the hoppiness subsides but then adds considerable depth. The roasty malts that carry through keep this beer from tipping off the bitter end.

Traded bottle as Stone 11th anniversary. Very interesting beer and I liked it a great deal. The aroma was hops and molassas and that continued into the flavour but then also some dark fruit and sweeter malts. At times this seemed to edge towards a quad or BSA. Really unique and enjoyable.

Ebony body with crimson hue and fluffy khaki head that leaves signicant lacing. Leafy, piney, citrusy nose. Grapefruit, Ponderosa, and roasted malt with a bit of alcohol present. Medium mouthfeel. Quite unique and pretty tasty.

Opaque black pour with "garnet edge" (BrotherGrendel), tan head with good retention and lacing. Hops all over the aroma, could smell them as soon as I cracked open the bottle. Roasted malty sweetness present and a little alcohol, but very hop-forward on the nose. Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Extremely complex brew with citrus and pine at the beginning and roasted sweet malt at the middle. Good balance. Bitter finish with a touch of alcohol, but very well hidden overall. Great cold weather brew for the hop heads!
