Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Pours a deep black with frothy tan head. Huge hop aroma and an interesting lack of overbearing malt aroma to take away from the hops. Flavor some of the same while dark not to much malt to take away the hop profile. Real Interesting.

I couldn’t find this at my local liquor store, so I bought a bottle on my latest trip up to Stone. I read that this is a repackaging of their 11th Anniversary dark IPA, so I knew what to expect when drinking this one. Poured into a pint glass with a one finger, light tan head. Looks like a very dark, opaque brown color. You can’t see through it. All I really smell here is hopps with a citrus undertone. Lots and lots of hopps. I feel the bite in the back/sides of my tongue, and bitter hopps and citrus are really all I taste. Except for the bite mentioned above, It feels pretty smooth in the mouth. Perfectly carbonated out of the bottle. I started drinking it right out of the fridge, and it was a little tough. As it starts to get closer to room temperature, it gets a little easier to drink.

22oz bottle. Hooray, I’m glad they brought this year back, since the only opportunity I did have to try it was about a year after it came out, which would no longer be a so good. Clear deep brown with two and a half finger tan head, good retention. Pine hops are up front. There is some alcohol, light roast, and some sweet caramel and brown sugar also present. The flavor has the hops still pretty piney, but turning a bit grassy as well. Can’t decide if it’s more roasty or sweet--either way, the finish is dry with bitterness around a 5-6. Light smooth carbonation with a full body. Very good beer, and glad I got to have a fresh one. Wow, am I the average rating guy today or what? $5.99 @ City Beer in San Fran.

Nice dark pour, slight head, lots of citrus hop flavor, Dark roasted malts, slight coffee, but the citrus, hops dominate, really a nice pairing. Maybe one of my favorite Stone brews!

pour a dark brown with a good size tan head. aroma of grapefruit hits you at first with some faint floral notes. taste is very hoppy with good hop bitterness with citrus and grassy hops. also has some dark malt flavors of chocolate and toffee. alchool is not to noticable and mothfeel is predominated by bittness from both the hops and malts. overall, this is another great beer from Stone.

(Stone 11th Anniversary, bottled 2007.) Pours deep deep dark brown, almost pitch black with a medium tan head. Very hoppy aroma, citrussy and floral. Elements of dark roasted malt and toffee and coffee. Medium full body with good carbonation. Flavor starts with sharp hop bite, and then the floral character of the hops open up, followed by bitterness both from the hops and the dark roast. Very obvious dark bitter coffee and a slight sweetness of toffee. Finishes with a lasting dry bitterness on the back of the tongue. Great combination of hoppy and dark roast bitterness.

Smokey, bitter, oaken aroma, opaque black in color. Similar flavor, very high hop bitterness and mild grassy flavor, with a sweet malty backdrop. Slight alcohol burn, but consistent with the style.
