Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

There is just nothing wrong with this beer. Very nice and rich with a great hop aroma and taste. It just has the perfect balance that covers the alc%. Starts with the big hop nose, then gose to a heavy IPA taste that finishes with a bit if a roast malt finish. Then comes back the hop bitterness at the end. Very good.

Objectively speaking: The remarkable feat of a clean, sharply hopped roasty ale with no edges. A great success from Stone.
I like: Still boastful hop aroma despite quite a few months of age. No roasty/hop clash at all. Very refreshing for a 8.7% beer, it drinks very, very easily. Rather complex hop profile, reaching towards citrus, piney and woodsy territories. No stickiness in the body. No overly agressive bitterness, focused on aromas.
I dislike: As far as such a recipe goes, I can’t imagine it being done much better.

Bottle courtesy of TomDecapolis, thanks! The pour reveals a black color with a thin beige head. The aroma is very pleasant, the hops feel floral, green and there’s a bark-like flavor, the malt feels roasty. Excellent flavor of floral, green, woody hops and roasted malt, the best of two worlds I guess. The body is light and liquorous while the carbonation is medium. It’s a very good black IPA, I wish they’d do it again.

Pitch black pour from the bottle with nice tan head. Roasty malt aromas. Good solid on the palate with bitter hop flavors. Not a bad brew.

Poured dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma was strong, similar to Double Bastard, with a little extra roasted scent and some citrus/pine. Taste was also similar to Double Bastard, with a little IPA thrown in. Mouthfeel is creamy and rich, with some hop bite on the tongue. Very nice beer!

Poured dark brown with plenty of lighter copper highlights. The head was tan, two-fingers tall and lasted. Somewhere between "sheets of lacing" and "thick webs of lacing" The aroma was Arrogant Bastard and then they added in some roasted, almost chocolatey malts. The flavor was more of a straightforward IPA in my mind. Aggressive pine/citrus hoppiness with some softer toasted caramel malts. Slight alcohol heat that Stone does quite well. Mouthfeel was thin to medium in body and the finish was dry as a bone. I really liked this one.

Strong citrus aromas, grapefruit peel, with hints of caramelized sugars, a slight roastiness. Pours dark amber brown color with no head. Very hoppy flavor, grapefruit, bitter citrus flavors with a mellow roasty flavor with hints of molasses. The slight roasty flavor of that dark malts mellow the intense hops a bit. There is a slight resin flavor in there too.

Bottle courtesy Gillard. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, and ash. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of citrus. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very good.
