COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Iíll be the low rater on this one. I like IPAs, and the bigger the better, but this one doesnít do it for me. Very bitter and burnt malts. Dark pour. Medium mouthfeel. From bottle. I may try it again, but this time it hit me the wrong way.

5/29/14 at CBO. Really liked this one. $3.29 bottle drank in store one of the better balanced black IPAs I've had. Great mix of hop and malts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A colablack beer with a big, beige and clouding head. The aroma is great, grapefruits and pine needles, liquirice, some tropical fruits. The balance is great in the aroma, the "black nuancees" are not dominating. Taste is strongly bitter, pine needles and some resin, dry roastiness, grapefruits. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Very smooth, velvet like to drink, enjoyable. The great beer, enough of bitterness, succesfully balance and velvet palate gives the final touch.

Perfect pour with light tan head that retains a lot of lacing. The 90 IBU's are definitely present in the bitterness but very balanced and complemented by a hint of coffee and caramel. Very well crafted.

A solid Black IPA. Dark brown, with scarlet hints. Off-white foamy head that leaves some lacing. Light malt nose. Fruity hops, with some roasted malts. Medium carbonation and nice mouthfeel. Tasty.

22oz bomber with a best by date of 8/28/2014. AP: very dark brown with ruby tinges under light; pours with a tan head. AR: strong pine, red grapefruit, mandarin oranges and toasted malt. TA: clash of bitter citrus notes and roasted malts, bittersweetness of dark chocolate and earthy tones at the back end. MO: medium bodied, medium carbonation and actually quite dry in the finish. OV: great black IPA, good balance of the bitter hop notes and roasted malt character.

Pours a deep cola red with two fingers of persistent tan head, heavy lacing. Nose is piney and earthy hops with a hint of citrus, dark roasty malt, coffee and chocolate. Taste starts out with sweet malt but is quickly overtaken by astringent dry bitterness. Medium bodied and creamy, with a lingering bitter finish and gentle warming. Wow - big and bombastic, sublimely self-righteous, indeed. Take all the best characteristics of stout and IPA, and combine. No caramel malt here, itís all dark and roasty goodness. I donít care if it makes me look like an amateur with the RateBeer crowd, I donít see thereís any possible way to improve on this, and so donít see how I can give this anything less than a perfect score.

Pours jet black with a mocha head. Aromas of rum soaked raisins, pine resin. Tastes of raisins with bitter hops. Some molasses. Overall very hard to describe with flavors not quite like anything I have experienced.

Best before June 5, 2014.
Appearance: The body appears black but through light a deep clear garnet hue is shown. The tan head explodes from the body with excellent retention.
Aroma: Piney and grapefruit immediately with prominent roast, sweet malts and caramel. Very nice smelling actually, nicely balanced and enticing.
Taste: Caramel and chocolate are prominent up front, but not huge in flavor. Overlying the malt base is a piney/earthy mild to moderate bitterness. Dark chocolate and raisins are on the finish.
Palate: Medium bodied, mild to moderate carbonation.
Overall: A little past date, but Stone puts such short enjoy by dates anyway. This tastes a tad oxidized, but overall itís very nice. Iíll try this fresher for sure.
