Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Draught/ Poured dark brown with medium head, Aroma of alcohol, chocolate and coffee. Flavour is coffee, citrus and malt. Bitter finish with some caramel. A very complex beer that must be sipped.

Bottle. Pours a deep, dark brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma is citrus hops with sweet malts. Notes of citrus, caramel, grass, and pine stand out. On the palate it is bitter and a little dry. The flavor pulls out a roasted malt taste, along with a bit of dark chocolate. It finishes bitter and dry. Wow, this was a great beer. Very complex. I would consider it to be more of a black IPA.

Pours dark and deep from the 22oz. bottle into a pint glass: Great head retention and minimal carbonation which allows for an outlash of complex flavors to hit the palatte immediately. An intense malt finish hits the back of the mouth and results in a lingering bitterness. Other notable flavors include citrus hops, faint caramel, bitter dry chocolate, dry coffee beans, and a little bit of wood. Drinkability: Ahh-mazin’. Rebuy: Again and again. #152 on 18102009, DG.

Bomber. Pours cola-color with tan head and plenty of fizz running up the sides of the glass. Aroma is surprisingly sweet of citrus and sugar. Initial flavor is 100% Stone, deeply bitter and hoppy, then turning to a lighter, sweeter side that re-exhibits some of the citrus from the nose. Some anise creeps into the palate on subsequent sips, and I do suspect that this will show its complexity even more as it warms. Body is crisp and very effervescent, consistent with the bubbly poor. Really fine beer!

Awesome beer, hits strong and bitter, but as it warms up becomes very flavorful, still learning the language

This beer pours dark with a substantial head that continues to bubble long after the beer has been poured. The beer smells surprisingly hoppy for such a dark beer. There also appears to be some citrus hidden somewhere in the aroma. This beer tastes like a dark, malty IPA. It is a bit bitter around the edges of the mouth, but it is still easy to drink. It has a lot of body without being thick or heavy in the mouth. This beer has a nice combination of crisp drinkability and body that you don’t find in many beers.

Bottle. Deep, dark, ruby red pour. Strong raisin notes. Some hops as well. Light chocolate notes. Very strong, dry hop taste. Slight alcohol notes. Nice balance between the malt and the bitter hops. Very good beer from Stone.

Dark brown pour, like coke, with a tan oily head. Surprised (in a good way) by the aroma, very hoppy, almost like an Imp IPA. Strong pine/resiny hops, grapefruit and some other sweet dried fruit (maybe dates) with a little bit of a roasted malt. The flavor starts out with the strong hops, followed by a very nice roasted chocolate body and then back to the grapefruity hops on the lingering aftertaste. Fantastic beer, wasn’t sure what to expect with the limited details on the bottle, but as usual this offering from Stone does not disappoint.
