We’re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.

First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Pours black with a nice frothy pale head. Head retention is excellent. Aroma of malt, hops, pine, slight citrus, spice, alcohol, very slight soy sauce and smoke. Flavors of spice, hop bitterness, slight citrus, caramel, alcohol, smoke, vanilla and very slight but pleasant sour notes. It’s just an awesome brew. Almost taste like a BA brew. With stone updating their recipes I wonder if they will make a 2.0 of this brew.

Bottle at home, bomber finished all by myself and boy was I glad to. Thanks tderoeck for the bottle. Together with Wookey Jack this must be the best Black IPA I've had up to date. Bitter as hell, roasted malts. The way I like my Black IPA's. More leaning towards the IPA-style. Absolutely lovely.

In short: nice black ipa.
Pours black with nice tan head, creamy and compact. Moderate head retention, some lacing. Herbal nose. Medium body, average carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is moderate bitter, dry, herbal, some roasty notes. A nice black ipa, but not the best i had.

This is a classic example of hype ruining a decent beer. For whatever reason I missed this one at the Anniversary party and managed to go 7 more years without trying it. Now that it’s going to be retired I felt like I had to, especially with a 100 rating! Totally overrated! It’s a simple black ipa, which has been over hopped. It’s one dimensional. Looking forward to Stone’s new beers since this one is going out of rotation.

Clear, deep copper, tall amd persistent head. Full body, intense flavors, smooth texture, nice alcohol heat, outstanding mouthfeel with perfect balance and good length. Very bitter but well supported by malty sweetness. Roast and caramel flavors overshadow hops but are nicely complementary. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

At a great tasting in Vranovo-Serbia, with markoijelena and cika Boban. Bottle. Many thanks to Costantin from the Hoppy imp. Greece. Pours brownish black with an ivory foamy head which leaves drafts when lowers. Nose: roasted malts, orange peel. Mouth: juicy malty feel, Sweet and citrusy as well.

Fairly dark black, border line cola color with half finger light khaki head. Smells of rye, dark malt, anise, piney hops, a little dark fruit. Taste is a dark grain/rye like bitter, burnt charred, cigarette ash, anise, a tiny bit of coffee and chocolate, pine hops. Good representation of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
