Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

This was enjoyed back-to-back with Double Bastard. Beautiful dark brown, silky looking pour with a big tan head. Hop power dominates the aroma, but there is a dried berry element in the aroma too. Massive hop attack is soothed by the rich dark malt profile, with a terrific figgy fruit softness that makes this pure joy to drink. Fantastic!

Stone does another winner. Very interesting beer, because it is stout black, with a comparable head. Big, frothy and tan. Smell is reminiscent of Arrogant Bastard, but with the roasted overtones of the dark malt. Flavor is hops obviously (Stone’s specialty)- but with a rich chocolate malt background that is missing in the bastard series, or ruination series. Bottle was 8 months old when I had it, and I guess it would age well, as that is the suggestion. I’m not sure I would consider this an aging beer (of course, I never keep any around long enough to officially call them "cellared"). I will absolutely make another trip to pick up some more of these. Beers like this (both in quality and style) are not easy to find.

22 oz bomber. Pours a deep brown with red highlights. 1/2" off white head and lacing you’d have to chisel off. Nose is citrus and pine. Moderate mouthfeel. Taste is dominated by hops with dark fruit flavors. Every sip is bitter, but pleasent with a malty background.

Bottled, sampled after a long night of heavy beers on my birthday. A unique black IPA. Still plenty of carbonation and foamy white head with 7 months on it. Transparent, deep brown edges, with a black center. Aroma is dominated by citric and piny Simcoe, with a medium roast malt base. The flavor is a slap of bitterness across the face, with a smoky porter tone underneath that seems to be like a weak porter. Crisp and an easy sipper, like Pizza Port’s Black Lie IPA, but toned down.

Bottled at Akkurat, Stockholm. Pours out in a clear reddish brown colour with a rich fluffy off-white foam. Very hoppy aroma of pine-needles and lemon-zest with undertones of toasted malts, caramelized nuts and licorice. medium to full-bodied with notes of pine-needles, wet grass and grapefruit-peels with dense malty undertones of roasted nuts, toasted malts, sweet coffee and licorice. Long hop-bitter finish of pine-needles and grapefruit with undertones of cedar-wood and sweet black coffee.

Bottle courtesy of Irishboy, thanks Richard! Pours deep, deep brown letting some light in around the edges. The head is toffee coloured, frothy, and I like how long it lasted in my Stone IPA glass. This beer shows aromas of fresh hop flowers, coffee beans, vanilla, grapefruit, and some smokey, dark chocolate. The flavour profile is uniquely Stone’s. There’s a hop/grapefruit/citrus component leading into a porter like dark chocolate/coffee middle. It is also quite roasty with just a small amount of toffee sweetness towards the end. The finish is chalky, astringent, dry. Coffee bean, hoppy lingering aftertaste with an espresso bitterness. Quite a treat. Thanks for sending this my way Richard!

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head and hops to the nose. Very complex balance of hops and citrus with some malts. Never seen an IPA this color. Would love to have another one!

Bottle, from Alaskanwarren, shared wtih Fin, Loz and Traci at our American beer tasting night. Deep brown, light tan head with that oil-on-water shine. Dark chocolate and grapefruit aroma, olive brine/tide pool, mineral, vanilla. First sip is all pine tree--resiny, aggressive bitterness. Then other nice things emerge: vanilla, rainsins, coffee. Traci says warm cola. A bit of chocolate as things settle. Really inventive beer, pulled off with a deft touch. Thanks BW!
