We’re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.

First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

A wonderful brown ale. Immediate flavor of malt with a slight chocolate undertone finishes with a lighting mild malt flavor for a few minutes. Deep flavor that almost melts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

UPDATED: MAY 22, 2014 Tap at Colorado mountain brewery, COS. Roasted malt aroma with subtle hoppiness. Pours black with a decent, light brown head and good lacing. Roasted malt dominates the start with a rich, sticky mouthfeel and a little bit of licorice flavor as well. Finishes very dry with a good amount of hops. Nice, well balance black ipa.

I think this was my second Black IPA, certainly not my last. I love the confusion of drinking such a dark ale, then getting hit with the IPA flavour instead. Even then it was a nice combo of faint roasted barley, and liquorice flavour mixed in with all the piney hoppyness. Had a great mouthfeel despite being so high in the alcohol and hops. Would love another one soon.

Poured into a shaker pint. Black pour - really black, even when you hold it to light.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle. Dark brown, near black with beige head. Light aroma of hops and subtle fruit. Flavour quite hoppy and dry with a bit of chocolate and subtle caramel malt. Very oily texture. Full body.

Somehow my least favorite of Stone. Not a huge black ipa fan. The alcohol cone through too obvious. Sharp on all edges of a black ipa. Grapefruit. Black licorice. Odd combo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Blacker than the ace of spades. Well executed for the style; plenty of roast but equally good doses of hop bitterness. A touch of sweetness on the finsh. Good stuff. Maybe the best of the style that i have tried? ($5 8oz Stone Liberty Station)

12 oz bottle, Kroger Bridge St. Dark cola pour, smooth light brown head. Aroma also cola, with floral hops, grapefruit. Flavor has more pine to it. Finish is pretty crispy and dry. Granular, mellow carbonation; medium body; lightly sticky. 100/100?? I don’t get it.

Birthday present from s_hartshorne. Bottle. Black beer with medium tan head. Aroma of pineapple and piney hops with some chocolate. Taste is piney, grapefruit, pineapple, passion fruit and chocolate. Medium bodied and smooth. Excellent beer from the BIPA loving apprentice.

This lovely Black IPA pours nice and dark with a lovely white foam that unfortunately did not last for long. Right out of the bottle wafts a pine and fruit combination that is almost confusing until you taste it. Lightly bitter on the bottom of my tongue and still sweet in my nose, I enjoyed the hell out of this excellent experience. I will be back to this Stone in the future.
