Weíre brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.

First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Itís interesting to taste this beer, itís boozy, hoppy and has a lingering bitterness to it. It also has a bit of an oily texture, pretty good, not a 100 though.

A very dark beer that would make you think it is a stout. Nicely bitter and hoppy. Once again stone always makes a great product ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Heavily skewed towards the hop end. Bitter, lots of clear additions. Itís great but I think thereís a bit of stones reputation figuring into that 100 rating. Not too balanced, but a nice bite with a hint of roasted malt.

Aroma: Dark roasted malt, espresso and an odd mosquito-spray smell - my guess is the hops. Appearance:Black with a small tan head. Flavor: Roasted malt and caramel - moderately sweet. Palate: Full bodied with soft carbonation and a silky texture. Overall: Very impressed with how well balanced it is for the typically unbalanced style.

This is a very good beer but itís definitely over hyped. Like many of Stoneís beers. †

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2013 Cold bottle from Brewdog. BB Sep 2013. Black, small tan head. Up front there is resin, grapefruit, some coffee detectable. Finish is chocolatey. I donít have much to say about it because there isnít much complexity, but it is a nice black IPA. Good balance between sweetness and bitterness.

Draught at BBF13. Caramelly aroma, a little alcohol. Very dark brown colour, seems cloudy. Good caramelly flavour. Quite bitter and quite alcoholic, but well-balanced. Sweetish with a spicy hop note. Good.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2009 Ah so it goes that this is an alias, and i just tried the new sublimely self rightoues version and it was pretty nice. 2nd sample Stone Anniversary Fest XI. On Cask dry hopped with simcoe and summit hops. Pours dark dark black with a 1 finger creamy head. The nose was very nice, with prickly hops. Very smooth and sweet taste, not overly bitter. Damn nice anniversary brew.

Bomber. Pours dark brown with a large, foamy tan head. Aroma is earthy, resiny hops with a strong malt background. A bit of chalkiness. Warmer temperature reveal a fruity smell, some citrus. I want to say there is a roasty or chocolate aroma but I think thatís just a strange synaesthetic response to the appearance. Without looking at the beer this could pass as a normal strong, balanced IPA or IIPA. Taste is different. Interesting and unique. Not too bitter. Creamy mouthfeel. I donít even know how to describe the taste really. Thereís definitely some roastiness in the finish, though subtle. The hops present in the aroma donít present themselves in the taste too much. Weird beer. This is good though.
