COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Pours obsidian with a creamy tan head; the appearance and aromas foreshadow the richness and depth to come. Sweet hoppy notes on the nose with molasses, roasted coffee, and burnt sugar. The aroma almost makes me think of an IPA mating with a Barleywine ale. This is a strong one which has deep bitterness that hangs on a bit. It's a black IPA that is better than most. This beer doesn't want to be too cold. About 55d-60d seems ideal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The body has an opaque dark black color with a thick light tan head on top. The head is long lasting and makes for tons of cool lacing on the glass. The aroma has solid roasted and toasted maltiness with caramel like sweetness backed up by equally solid citrusy hops. Its deep maltiness sets up a firm base for the hops to work there bitter magic. From the base malt I get firm toasted and roasted character with loads of caramel like sweetness that weaves in and out of the dominate hops. The hops bring a big hit of citrus and pine like bitterness. Notes of grapefruit, lime, bitter orange and pine resin hang onto the tongue long into the slow fading finish. The big full body brings a heavy slow sipping and sticky texture with just enough carbonation to keep things from getting cloying.

Bottle to pint glass. Roast and slight citrus on the nose. Deep and dark with full brown head. Taste is a little too roasty, with the hops in reserve.

Black bodied, beige head. Hugely hoppy aroma, pine and spruce. So much that despite the roasted malts you could identify this as a straight ipa in a blind tasting. Even more so in the taste, very bitter, delicious, rich aroma. Love this style and adore this beer. Well balanced between dark malts yet never dimming down the raw hop appeal. Great brew! Bottle to plastic taster at the RBAG14 warmup After a slew of Stone trivia questions, one about this beer, itís time to rate this. Hops, citrus, lots of pine a little spruce. Reddish brown with a long lasting white head. Hoppy, citrus, and lots of caramel.

Draft @ Yard House. Pleasant, floral aroma. Dark color with ruby highlights. Flavor is floral with a nice citrus taste. Good body. Mostly an IPA, but you can taste a little dark malt in there too. Very nice!

Pours a deep black with no head and seemed like little to no carb. Wasnít a bad thing though. This was a little like a porter to me. Aroma was nice and I caught some sweet malts with caramel and vanilla along with some bitter citrus hops. Taste was very good and all the flavors came together nicely. Nicely bitter and I didnít notice any alcohol in it. Solid offering from a great brewery.

Nicely done black IPA, lots of roast grain and hop bitterness without being overwhelming. Black with abundant beige head, smell mostly of roast grains, hops come in at the taste. Nice mellow bitter finish, some lingers, making you want more.,

Poured from a bomber into a snifter glass darkest black brown with a tan head. Aroma is roasted sweetness. Slight coffee. Flavor cocoa sweet with a grassy hops to follow. The burnt roasted bitterness. Balanced beautifully. Stone did one better than many---if you are a serious black IPA fan.
