3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 3/1/09. Dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma of coffee and milk chocolate. Flavour started with some sweet, creamy chocolate before a touch of smokiness and some spice. The finish was pleasantly bitter.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
[on draught at The Retreat, Reading] Creamy head; smells like an ashtray. Smoke remains in taste, but is mellowed with smooth creamy coffee and a hint of licquorice. Aftertaste smokey and a little spicey. For me this was one of the nicest English pints I’ve yet tried, but for others it’s possibly a "love it or hate it" one. As a smoked beer, it was certainly far better than a German Rauchbier I had the same night.

Counting house. Aroma is sweet roasty malt, vanilla and hints of esspresso. Taste is sweet roasty malts with hints oif smoked malt to start with, but a bit too bitter, however as it warms the palate becomes smooth and very dirnkable with some tart rich fruits and spicey notes.

Cask, Wetherspoon’s Hammersmith.
Fine smokiness that is not overwhelming, more like a nice variantion on an ale. Smooth, refreshing, long lingering ashy finish.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Coffe nose, small brown head. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes. Quite bitter in the finish. Quite a light body and very stout like. I’m surprised it’s an old ale. Not bad.

This was pretty good. 2.2.10 Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Faint ashy aroma. Sweetness and sourness in the taste, but it’s mostly leathery ash. Mid bitter finish. Enjoyed this. 3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours as a stout with a good sized head. Chocolate and coffee in the scent. Excellent mouthfeel, slightly dry finish but also slightly oily. Spoilt by being a little too thin for me. Quite bitter but with some sweetness also present. Tastes of roasted coffee malts and maybe a touch of sugar, but not much else. Still, very drinkable.

A Mes rate: Cask at the completely useless Mechanical Elephant JDW. Waste of time the place may be but this beer certainly was not. Creamy coffee and a gentle burnt sandalwood note. An unexpected citric hint in the flavour too. Long long smoked finish. Rather tasty stuff.

Cask@The Lord Moon of The Mall, Whitehall, London. Deep brown to black in colour. Aroma is lightly roasty /smoky. Palate is sweet and lighly acidic. Some nice roastyness and a subtle smoky note. It has some nice flavour, but the palate is just too weak, finishes with a slighly watery edge.

Gravity Cask @ Royal Oak Beer Festival 2006, Fritham (New Forest). Dark with a tan head. Slightly smoky and some roast edging towards charred. Vanilla tooth coating sweetness leading into a dry roasty finish with hints of liquorice. I couldnt really get on with this.
