Cask; Seasonal - January & Februsry. Previously regular.
Brewed at OG 1048 and ABV 5.0%. A delightful, warming, dark porter type ale, with a roasted malt taste and a hint of liquorice surrounding a developing bitter flavour. Very appealing to the eye.

Cask Real Ale 0.25L glass at St Urhos Porter days. Pale beige long lasting head. Mild nose. Dark reddish black colour. Slightly sour mildly smokey malty taste. Some hints of licorice. At the end hoppy bitterness. Not very smokey. Average carbonation.

A very solid old ale-stout. Really well balanced. Coffee; roasted malts and chocolate. A lovely winter brew. Consumed on tap in the Queen’s Head, Chelmsford. A fantastic beer I will look out for in bottle conditioned. Keep it up.

(Cask at White Horse , Parson’s Green, London, 28 Nov 2009) Dark brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dried fruit, liquorice and a touch of smoke. Malty, slightly roasted taste with coffee, toasty malt and dark bread. Mellow bittersweet finish. Above medium body, smooth mouthfeel. Well balanced and tasty. Nice.

Cask @ YNWA, Kolding. Pours a nice, deep, chestnut brown with a small, creamy, light-brown head. Aroma is sweet, lots of fruity plums, some milky chocolate and light smokiness. Low carbonation, fine mouthfeel. Flavour starts out with a tartish fruity edge, but soon settles as a sweet, malty beer with peity, chocolate and roasted tones. Long, lingering, spicy and smoky aftertaste.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 3/1/09. Dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma of coffee and milk chocolate. Flavour started with some sweet, creamy chocolate before a touch of smokiness and some spice. The finish was pleasantly bitter.

[on draught at The Retreat, Reading] Creamy head; smells like an ashtray. Smoke remains in taste, but is mellowed with smooth creamy coffee and a hint of licquorice. Aftertaste smokey and a little spicey. For me this was one of the nicest English pints I’ve yet tried, but for others it’s possibly a "love it or hate it" one. As a smoked beer, it was certainly far better than a German Rauchbier I had the same night.

Counting house. Aroma is sweet roasty malt, vanilla and hints of esspresso. Taste is sweet roasty malts with hints oif smoked malt to start with, but a bit too bitter, however as it warms the palate becomes smooth and very dirnkable with some tart rich fruits and spicey notes.

Cask, Wetherspoon’s Hammersmith. Fine smokiness that is not overwhelming, more like a nice variantion on an ale. Smooth, refreshing, long lingering ashy finish.

Coffe nose, small brown head. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes. Quite bitter in the finish. Quite a light body and very stout like. I’m surprised it’s an old ale. Not bad.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2010 Cask at ’Spoons, Milton Keynes. Very dark brown with a small beige head. Smoked bacon aroma. Pleasant salty, ash taste. Some bitterness. This was pretty good. 2.2.10 Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Faint ashy aroma. Sweetness and sourness in the taste, but it’s mostly leathery ash. Mid bitter finish. Enjoyed this.
