RBSG 2007. To the Goucho, I can not thank you enough for doling out 2 ounces of this for me. Hazy copper color with no head. Powerful caramel aroma. Massive caramel and malt sweetness in the flavor, but with a little hop bitterness towards the end. Spicy and a bit of yeast. To quote Joebrew: “This is liquid toffee.”

Small tan head, fair retention with a skinny stringy lace. Seriously hazy copper/amber color, very murky. Nose is juicey, lovely with caramel, honey, toffe and a hint of licorice, a smidgen of pine. Hops surprisingly subdued! Body is full, palate is creamy, co2 level is right on. Flavors of caramel thats lightly sweet with notes of dark fruits, plums, berry notes, alcohol warmth, hints of chocolate, citrus and some stashed pineyness. The 12% alcohol is lovingly hidden and sneaky too! Finish is lightly sweet and malty, fairly well balanced out with a big hop bite. Not sure how i got the honor of rating this beer but, oh wait, Yes i do! My favorite west coast (or any coast for that matter) trading partner hooked me up!! Thanks to SDbruboy for this gem! Cliff you ROCK my friend !!!

On tap sometime between Christmas and New Years. Big bomb of a barley wine. I think it’s the strongest they ever made. It was darker and perhaps a little less hoppy (probably more malty) than Old Guardian. Different, but not all that different from OG. Still, a wonderful chance to taste a very rare beer is appreciated. Thank you Stone.

Sample at Stone Brewpub 1/6/07. Slightly hazy brown/orange. Thin off-white head. Nose is caramel, alcohol, rich malt. Flavor is caramel, slightly fruity malt, alcohol, spicy bitter finish. An interesting kind of nuttiness (brown malt?) in the finish. Too alcoholic right now. Nice creamy mouthfeel.

The aroma is of hops and candy. I had no idea that this was a 12 percent beer. It was a good beer, but at the same time I do not remember anything special about it to really give me that awesome beer presence about it.

4 oz glass @ Stone Bistro. When we drank this, my brother and I both looked at each other and said "wow". This is a beer for grown ups. The aroma is pure delicious hops, mixed with some nice candy like sugars, toffee and even some vanilla. I dont see any mention from anyone else, but I swear I tasted Oak in this beer. I dont know if this is barrel aged or what, but it sure tasted like it. This was a fantastic capper to a full, adventurous evening enjoying Stone beers. Bravo.

Draft @ the brewery. What a treat to try this one. This beer is scary good and what makes it even more scary is I would have never guessed that it would have been 12+% alcohol. Awesome brew. Very crisp.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2007 On draft at Stone’s Winter Storm. Color was a orange/amber, with minimal white head. Aroma was sweet and malty. Flavor was very sweet; bubblegum and malt. I liked it, but definitely a sipper. Alcohol presence could definitely be felt.

I had this beer on tap at the Stone World Bistro on Christmas Eve, 2006. I pours an opaque apricot color with a small, quickly diminishing white head. The flavor is sweet, with orange/apricot notes, and it’s creamy on the palate. Finishes very smoothly.
