I actually expected something like a Heller Bock before opening the bottle and therefore I was quite surprised of this deep black brew with smooth body and very low head that came out of the bottle. The nose was okay, but high malty with some hints of nuts. Taste is alright as well: Bittersweet chocolate, sweetened espresso, brown sugar and caramel. Hints of leaves. The finish is quaffable but little bit too malty for me. Anyway, certainly q good beer.

10/9/11/11/12/11

Bottle bought somewhere in Germany (gift from my father). Smell of chocolate and dark bread. Sweet taste with dark bread and chocolate. Easy to drink and malty.

Bottle looks good. Beer in the glass deep black, nice head. Starts strong but not alcoholic, fine malty-roasty, dry background. Also some earthy notes. Well balanced, warming finish. Great beer!

Half-litre bottle: best before 7th June 2014. Poured (twice) into a leffe badged stemmed goblet at home on 8th Dec 2012. Really deep, dark brown/ruby: almost black, on top a tan head that faded a bit too swiftly for my liking. Loads of chocolate in the nose and taste, Camp Coffee too (remember that stuff?): also reminded me of a rich, creamy Dandilion and Burdock sort of flavour (who remembers that stuff as well?). Now add a liquorice stick to the mix and some hops to give a slightly bitter undertone and you’re half way to tasting and smelling what I did during my review (on my own). I thought the alcohol well hidden with the flavours masking the 7.5% ABV nicely: all in all, a very pleasant brew. One of the best German beers I’ve had for some time.
