COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Fine brewed cheap German attempt at a Baltic porter, with a good roasted flavor.

500 ml bottle from Redmonds. Black, viscous oily pour, thin resiny tan head settles on the liquid. some roast malt notes in the aroma, fruity hop notes. Sweet molasses in the flavour, some oily bitter hops, and lingering roast bitterness. Big bodied, thick mouthfeel. Milk chocolate finish. Me likey.

500 ml bottle from McTapps, thanks Sabine! Into a snifter at home, ABV 7.5% Pours an almost black beer with one finger of thin, light beige head. Average retention, light lacing left on the glass and a skim on the beer’s surface. Aroma is moslty of dark chocolate, a bit weak. Taste is quite good, a bit sweet, dark milky chocolate, toasted malts, changing to light coffee on the finish. Well hidden alcohol.Mildly bitter on the aftertaste. Almost medium body, soft carbonation. Not a bad one but a bit one-dimensional, for one reason or the other I expected more from this brewery.

Kudos to the old Baltic pirate for exploring another inlet within the vast extension of the Baltic Porter Seas. After the sweet, cloying, brownish Hanse Porter, this Stark Bier goes further towards the other end of the style. It never really gets there though. Although nice and dark, almost black, with a decent, beige head, it is still sweet and extremely malty, with caramels, roasts, ashes, nuts and some smoke on the flavour and aroma. Not much of dark chocolates behind the mentioned flavours and aromas. This ship never reaches those boggy shores for the fruitiness of lingonberries and the tartness of cranberries. There’s indeed a pinch of saltiness in the finish, but it is overshadowed, or better – over diluted – by the rather thin, watery body. I’d like to see more of an oily, slick feel. We’d expect more adventure, blood, decapitations, from a brewery such as Stoertebeker.

Clear black colour, firm beige head. Aroma of chocolate, Schwarzbrot, caramel and molasses. Sweetish flavour, malts, caramel and banana. Finish caramel, banana and malts. Not my favourite porter, in my perception it’s even closer to a bock than to a porter.

Bottle, 7.5%. Nicely roasted aroma. Roast coffee and a hint of salt liquorice.Almost black colour. Brown shine, seems clear. Good light brown head, semi-stable. The flavour starts off lagery, turning nicely roasted and bready. Like a strong Schwarzbier. A little salty in the finish, and also has some earthy notes, perhaps a little horse.

Bottle. Pours cloudy very dark brown with airy light tan head. Clear aroma of malt and caramel with notes of roast and fruit. Bitter, roasty flavour, with sweet notes of caramel and malt, and touches of dark chocolate. Subtle hints of liquorice in the rather roasty finish. Nice, if a trifle watery.
