muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Feb 16, 2004 765 ml bottle. Very thick, opaque dark mahogany, enormously yeasty. Pungent yeasty-caramel-bit of chocolate on the nose. Strongly vinous and acidic (blood oranges, perhaps?), with some hints of sour apple. Decent, certainly, but hardly a top Dubbel, if that's really what it is.
Biddle_Brau (155), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Jun 15, 2008 Very nice authentic Dubbel. Primarily a malty flavor but dubbel fruit tones come make their presence known in the aroma. Sampled at Stoudts 17th Annual Microfest: June 2008 bbp182 (253), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA May 31, 2008 It has a medium/amber color to it with an ok head and ok lacing. It is a very sweet malty smell. Very inviting. It has a very sour/lemony taste to it. Like biting into a lemon. Pours dark cola with a fine head. Nice dried-fruity aroma, cloves, toffee. Spicy, clove-driven flavor, not at all too sweet (though not exactly dry either, just balanced). Easy drinking, and a pleasure to go through 750 mls. This is probably the best American-brewed dubbel that I’ve had to date. JoeMcPhee (3807), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 14, 2008 Tap at Stoudt’s Brewing. Pours a deep brown colour with a thick moussey dark brown head. The aroma is quite rich and plummy. Deep rich molassesy character, soft plums with light cherry and chewy malt base. Very softly sweet. Palate is rich and sweet, but not at all cloying. White raisin, cherry, caramel and brown sugar with a light chocolate flavour as well. Very well-balanced dubbel. Soft and chewy with a great balance of the yeast and the malt. Really awesome brew. Linus_Stick (1556), Moon Township, Pennsylvania, USA May 13, 2008 Abbey Dubbel is the one style of beer I don’t think the American brewers have been able to pin down. The aroma was average. Dark fruit, spice and wine. Pour was a beautiful deep dark brown with a huge pillowy tan head. Taste was very flat and somewhat weak. Raisin, brown sugar and plum with a very watery aftertaste. Little to no carbonation in this one. Subpar.
