Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Poured from bottle. Aroma of hops, malt and floral notes. Cloudy amber, thin white head. Big hops, but also a strong malt presence, with a bourbon aftertaste - no kidding. Alcohol is well hidden at first, but gives this beer a heady feel about midpoint. Mellows at finish. I’ll be looking for this one again

Bottle sampled at NFB&WF ’08 at Martha Clara Vineyards. Pours a clear gold. Mild aroma of pine and malt. Much more flavorful then the aroma suggests with a solid malt backbone up front followed by some resinous pine. Nice slightly sticky mouthfeel without being cloying. Bitter at the finish, but not excessive. Good stuff.

12 oz. bottle - purchased at hop devil grill; pours solid gold with nice hazy to it and plenty of carbonation; huge aromas of piny hops, but flavors follow a little on the weak side; texture is thin and lacking that malt body to smooth out the bitters

Maybe I got an old bottle or maybe a bad one b/c there’s no way a beer that scores a 96 tastes like mouthwash and alcohol but then again it does have a high ABV.

12oz bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Pours light gold with a slight haze to it, topped by a thin white head. Smells of pineapple, mango, caramel, and pine. Resinous pine and citrus flavors with a light taste of alcohol. Though it smells wonderful the flavor is merely alright.

Bottle. Pours a light brown with a small white head. Aroma of nice caramel malt, bitter citrus hops. Flavor of wheat cracker, good malt-hops balance. Crisp and quite tasty. Not very hoppy considering it’s a double IPA, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Nicely balanced. Abv is very well hidden.

Bottle. Aroma very fleshy citrus. Flavor the same tangy citrus, meshing nicely with mildly sweet, light but full-bodied malt. Very nice, although I feel like similar results have been achieved with less than 10.6 abv.

As Larry David would say: Pretty, Pretty Good. Pours a nice strong head that fades after a few minutes but leaves behind some nice lacing. The Stoudts Double IPA has a nice dark golden color. I had braced myself for a big hop flavor and I got it but not in that bad way. While saying it was balanced would be pushing it as that is not the point of this beer but it was very smooth and as balanced as a Double could be. The bitterness hits you on the way out though and if you stop sipping for a bit you are still tasting the bitterness.
