jeremyd365 (109), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Jun 22, 2008 Poured into a short glass (~ half pint?) and poured a medium bodied, clear golden with just a hint of head that quickly dissapated. It smelled hoppy and a quite winey. It tasted more of the same with the alcohol in dominance over the hops and hints of fruit. It felt medium to thin in my mouth and was semi drinkable. I’ve enjoyed other imperials much more than this one, but this brew wasn’t too shabby. Bhops (329), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 22, 2008 bottle courtesy of daknole via mar, golden amber pour with minimal head. Aroma of fruit, honey and syrup. Not too much hops if any in the aroma, suprising for a double IPA. Flavor is honey with spicy finish, undercurrent of hops. Hops becomes much more prominent at the end of the beer (or perhaps when it warms up). mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Jun 21, 2008 bottle courtesy of daknole. light amber pour with no real had. a very small hop scent that is dominate by honey and syrup. the hops are definitely not the stars here until the beer warms up. when it’s cold the malts really shine thru as honey with a bitter finish. PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jun 16, 2008 Nice big resiny sweaty hops, some citric grapefruit, and some tropicality too, like mango or pineapple, or maybe apricot. Deep bready malts (dark rye-like breads) behind the hops. Amber color, smallish head. Surprisingly huge on the sweet bready caramel malts up front, but not so surprising after I read the 10.6% ABV figure! Hops show up as a resiny sweaty lightly fruity complement on the sides of the tongue, and balance out the finish, which is long and rich, almost a fruitcake like presence. Atypical of DIPAs, but nevertheless a fantastic rich barleywine-esque beer with deep malt and hop flavors. My first new rating from Stoudts in years, and I’m happy to see they’re still rocking. mfaulke (81), clemson, South Carolina, USA Jun 13, 2008 Sweet with a malty presence throughout. The hops come out in the finish but they never quite override the malt. This is dangerously smooth for a big beer. A great DIPA, and a nice departure from some of the hop bombs out there (yes I do like hops bombs as well). Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jun 13, 2008 Thanks to Dim for this one
My bottle poured into a tulip glass produced a lasting finger worth of head that turned slowly to a thick lace across the glass .The body of the brew was a clear golden copper color
The hops aroma was very pronounced you could smell it in the room. Some malt sweet notes as well as other citrus smells
Wow very sweet for a DIPA not overtly so but more than I expected, a little alcohol warmth present too you get the pine flavors of the hops as a finish Good body as well as carbonation
I’d drink this again. I would love to try it on tap to see if there is any difference to the hop profile. Another solid brew from Stoudts
bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 12, 2008 Bottle, courtesy daknole. Pours a little hazy but clears to a bright copper with a thick and lacy off-white head. Sweet smell of grapefruit, hay, mango, a little pine, and a smidgen of alcohol. Sweet, sugary, almost oily full body and moderate carbonation. Moderately bitter finish, because the hops are fighting an uphill battle against a tide of malty toffee. The alcohol also shows up in the finish, but not enough to make the finish particularly hot; although I’d rather see this beer somewhere in the 8’s.
So, to summarize: needs more hops, less booze, and probably a bit lower level of non-fermentable sugars to bring it into balance. Otherwise, pretty darn tasty! cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Jun 12, 2008 Ruby copper with smaller head and an almost meaty, brothy body. Expecting to smell more hops but left with malted and cereal flavors, vanilla, caramel, barnyeard cherry, slightly oaked and a light boozy cloviness. Overall not too bad, alcohol is not overly detectable, yet it is present. Drinkable, almost dangerously so.
