Very tart, almost mandarin-orangey, citrus aroma. Likewise, a deeply fruity character ... puckeringly strong with not a problem of pronouncing it’s big alcohol content. Big beer for big boys. Excellent. Ughsmash (3999), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 5, 2006 Bottled. Poured hazy peach with a short-lived cap of off-white head. Nose was juicy and consisted of light and citrus fruits (pears and huge grapefruit), pine, and additional malty sweetness to go with the grapefruit. The flavor carried hefty doses of sweet malts and had a medium-high level of bitterness... hard to distinguish the flavors of the malty base, but they were surely sweet... grapefruit and pine resin gave this a solid Cascade-y presence, with mild juiciness remniscent of Simcoe... also some grassy and leafy notes in there. The high booze content was well-suppressed, which is good... and the bitterness was at a reasonable level... but the malt contingency and lower carbonation made it feel a tad flat across the palate. Tacky, sweet, and piney finish. Overall a very solid offering. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 4, 2006 Bottle. Ruddy orange, clear pour with a nice white head. Nice IPA aroma, hoppy, grassy, citrusy (esp. grapefruit), floral. Flavor falls a little bit flat but is nothing to turn up my nose at. Goes down smooth with fresh finish and nearly no alcohol in the body. A very decent beer. TrevorFloyd (309), Connecticut, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2006 Updated: Aug 10, 2006Excellent beer, great double IPA. Hits all the expected notes: big ABV, citrus hoppiness (with some grassiness too), malty backbone. However, after having Stone IPA and a few other greats, I notice that here the disparate elements don’t gel as well as in it’s brethren. It’s still great, but not quite as well put together as others. In a style with little variability, that is a serious detriment. Oh well, I still wouldn’t complain about having one in hand.
