Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours a medium to slightly dark yellow with a small and short-lived head. The nose brings a strong scent of hops, perhaps some Simcoe and Columbus, along with a dose of malt at the end. The palate begins hoppy, bringing a smooth bitterness that is pretty easy on the senses. Malt comes in toward the middle to end. The finish is relatively sweet, but certainly not cloying. Overall, not the best IIPA, but certainly a winner, and one that belies its abv.

Pours a hazy gold with thin white head, little lacing. Aroma is pretty faint. Smells of a bit of alcohol/hops and nice warm strawberry smoothie. Taste is a citrusy syrupy hops leaning towards a refreshing spruce as opposed to a bitter sap. And one finds a nice prominent apricot in the after taste. Interesting. I feel like the maker of this beer deserves more credit than my rating merits.

Clear amber, decent head and lace. Aroma of mellow grapefruit, ripe berry, woody hops. medium mouthfeel, subtle carbonation. Flavor is very balanced with herby, woody hops, mellow citrus, lightly roasted malt, caramel. Very subtle for a double ipa, but delicious and very well balanced.

From a bottle...pours a deep orange with a solid white head. Aroma is robustly hopped...very fruity (orange, grapefruit abound) and also has some piney/resin notes as well...enjoyable! Flavor is pretty good as well...heavy on the citrus hops, but a good malt backbone on here as well. Bitterness doesn’t kick in until real late, and keeps you coming back for more. Some metallic note did bother me at times, but not enough to keep this from being a nice drink. Palate was smooth, but lacked some of the oily characteristics I enjoy in a DIPA. Was a bit surprised to see this one was clocking a 10.6%...the palate did not suggest there was this level of alcohol.

Thanks to hopscotch! Wow...first of all, would not have guessed that this was %10.6 ABV. I didn’t look until after finishing it and was quite suprised. Drinks like a regular IPA in terms of alcohol. Aroma is quite hoppy and intense, with notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pine and a subtle herbal note. Flavor is mainly citrus notes, followed by moderate bitterness. The bitterness fades after awhile and you’re left with a lingering sweetness, similar to a light sugar. Overall a highly drinkable DIPA.

orange with receding orange-white head and very nice lacing. aroma is (deceptively) subtle, mostly citrus and pineapple. flavor is much fruitier than most IPAs, the pleasant fruity sweetness not quite overwhelmed by citrus-y hops. nice bittersweet finish. medium-bodied and fairly viscous, which helps hide the alcohol, though also a bit under-carbonated maybe.
