moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Jul 3, 2006 After sampling Stoudts IPA, I was very dissapointed with this double. The pour was a murky golden color, with plenty of large sediment particles floating around. The head was off-white and had very good retention and tons of lacing. The aroma here was rather bland, and underwhelming--and the taste followed that to a tee. The Stoudts IPA has more kick than the double--which makes no sense. I was expecting a hop monster, and all I got was a touch of hops and a bland tasting beer. If you are going to call your beer a double, then you better give me twice the hop power damn’t! " Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jun 24, 2006 12 oz bottle. Burnt orange pour with a nice white head. Lovely lace rings. Nose is brandied peaches and sweet orange, somewhat resinous. More maltiness than others of the style. Malty caramel flavors, more citrus (bitter orange). Piney resin behind the other flavors. Finish is a bit hot; might be interesting to lay a few down. OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jun 23, 2006 Poured froma 12oz bottle a burnt orange color with a small thick beige head. Aroma was citrus hops, orange peel and sweet malts. Flavor was malty caramel with a bitter hop finish. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 18, 2006 Updated: Mar 30, 2007Bottle aged 9 months.
What bothered me most was that this beer did not have the fullness to it nor the flavor to it as I had hoped. It tasted Ok when the bottle was poured but defenitaley warmed up my tastes as the bottle ran low and the ale warmed up. Too much malt in my taste for an IIPA. Not bad but maybe not worth the price of more than one beer.
Update: Draft. Taste is of a cherry lollipop with malt and hops. Still did not taste as well as others give it. A disappointment. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 17, 2006 The aroma has plenty of pine and citrus like hops along with sweet malt. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The flavor is bitter-sweet with tastes of grapefruit and turpentine accented by caramel malt and paper. The palate is not bad. Overall it has some nice qualities but not my favorite Double IPA. One other thing that should be mentioned is that this beer improves as it warms. jsquire (2087), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Jun 16, 2006 Golden orange color out of the bottle with a thin, egg shell head. Subdued nose of citrus hops that turned to Aquanet hairspray as it warmed. Lots of sugary sweetness to this double IPA with hints of orange and pineapple. I expect more of a hop presence from a big IPA, and this just doesn’t have it. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 16, 2006 Updated: Oct 26, 200612oz bottled on 3/22/06. Pours a hazy red orange with a moderate off-white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, resin, and caramel malts. I don’t mean to piss all over this, but it seems like all IIPAs smell the same, just different degrees of goodness. Lotsa grapefruit in this one. Sweet caramel and grapefruit pine, I think the balance is tipped more toward bitterness after 1/4 way through the swallow. I’m burping up pine cones. Very little alcohol burn. Full bodied and creamy. 4.1 previously, now, 3.8

now7-4-8-4-15 (aroma and flavor are 7.5) Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Nov 15, 2007A pretty standard double IPA. Lots of the citrus hops. A good amount of malty sweetness for balance. I wish it was more hoppy though. I want a punch in the face with hops from my IIPA’s. 10.6% abv, you’d never guess.
rerate: Man, i think i may have only had this once before and I’ve lived in PA for over a year now. Anyways, this smells good. real good. Huge grapefruit aroma. seems promising. Flavor is good and grapefruity too. WHOA, this thing finishes with a punch of alcohol. pretty unappealing. could be that it doesn’t pair well with chex mix.
