Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

My first double IPA, i thought that it had more malt than hop character... the beer smellled slightly spicy and was reminicent of potporry. Flavor was plenty of malt with some good hop character towards the middle of consumption. It was a great companion to my Fries. Finished with notes of a normal IPA hops, but still a little sweet a good brew, but not what I was expecting

To me, this is a little atypical of Imperial IPA’s, although still quite good. Pours a clear deep gold/amber with a rather small off white head that subsided to a thin white ring pretty quickly.. Nose is quite malty with sweet caramel notes and a yeasty/alcohol cahracter. There are some citrus hop notes in the background, but not the huge hop nose of many Imperial IPA’s. Thick, full and rich mouthfeel is in keeping with the high gravity, and the richness is quite enjoyable. Flavor follows the aroma with sweet caramel and toffee as the predominate flavors. Orange and spice hop notes follow, and transition in to a mildly dry and bitter finsih, althought the sweetness is still detectable. All in all, this is a very enjoyable Imperial IPA, although a little uncoventional

Pours a murky, straw orange with a thin, creamy head. Citrus and floral hops aroma (not as much hops aroma as expected) with tropical fruits, plenty of caramel malts, and sweet bread. Very flavorful beer with a ton of sweet malt and yeasty bread taste, but surprisingly not as bitter as one would expect with an Imperial IPA. There is a considerable amount of hops taste however to offset the huge amount of malts. It has all the hops characteristics of citrus, grass, pine, and floral. Great balance of hops and malts, and it is full-bodied and feels wonderful in the mouth. Very smooth, creamy texture with a long, slightly bitter finish. Very good Imperial IPA - my only complaint is that there is not quite enough hops bite. Great complexity though and tasty.

Bottled. Poured amber, with a nice white head. Nose was malty, and the flavor was malty with nice alcohol notes and a finely balanced hop finish. I didn’t find it to be as hoppy as advertised and , while I love hops, I thought the balance was excellent in this brew.

Let’s start with me admitting that I am not a hop-head. If you’re a hop-head you’ll probably be a little disappointed in the lack of bitterness, and that’s one of the things that I really like about this beer, the hops aren’t as overpowering as you’d find in a typical double IPA, allowing the fantastic malt character of this brew to shine. Pours a hazy amber with a fluffy off-white head, lots of dense lacing. Aromas of citrusy hops, sweet malts, pineapple, alcohol. Flavor matches aroma with a wonderful malt backbone, the best malt flavor I’ve ever tasted in a double IPA or just about any other beer outside of a Trappist/abbey for that matter. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is heavy with moderate carbonation. Finishes malty, sweet and a little fruity with a citrus/pine hop bite and a hint of cracked pepper. Again, the level of bitterness may disappoint the average hop-head, but for me this a very nicely balanced brew with outstanding malt flavor. Delicious!

Amber, cloudy, full of particulates. Noticeable alcohol in aroma & flavor. Cidery & citrusy as well. Nice mouthfeel with a bit of expected syrupy feel and alcohol burn. Very good.

Nice semi-cloudy, golden amber, thin head, sweet aroma, medium body, definitely one of my favorite IPAs, however, I believe this year the alcohol is a tad more prominent than in years past.
