hiphops (280), caldwell, New Jersey, USA Apr 10, 2006 a very orange golden color. thin head. smells of hops and brown sugar. taste slight hoppy then sweet then a little bitter. hints of orange very good very complex alcohol is hidden well jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Apr 8, 2006 From a 12 oz. long neck brown bottle with what looks like a rubbed out bottled on date on the neck of the bottle. Made a decent appearance, poured a cloudy orange hued amber with a foamy white head that settled into a thin lacing, good carbonation. Had a big tropical fruity nose with some floral hoppiness and whiffs of sweet, spicy alcohol. A smooth, sort of syrupy medium bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Tropical fruity, orange and pineapple mainly, taste, a mellow hop bitterness, buttery yeastiness and caramel maltiness, spicy, warming alcohol presence in the palate and an oily hop and sweet malty finish with the spicy alcohol warmth lingering in the palate.
A good east coast D/IPA from Stoudt’s, a welcome change of pace for the style, worth seeking out and trying. Acquired in a trade with fellow BR Jah Noth, many thanks!!
erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Apr 6, 2006 Pours a med. cloudy amber with a whipped head. Aroma is heavily alcoholic with a much lower hop prescence than I was expecting. They could have tripled the dry hops for this and it would not have been too much. What is there is lightly floral with some pineyness. The body is med/med-heavy. The flavors is med sweet with a great deal of fruity hops and to me, there is an excessive amount of esters. The yeast that is used is neither attenuative enough to dry out such a beer, nor is it clean enough to ferment something of such a high OG without making a huge amount of fruitiness. The finish is med. bitter but is in no way dry. To me this is not an IIPA but a under-hopped American Strong Ale. Bad beer? No, just a bad IIPA. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA Mar 27, 2006 Bottled. Thick pour, more orange colored than I expected from a double ipa. This feels more chewy and malty than other double ipa’s as well. It has full and rich flavor, long finish. I like it, it’s just not in the ’thick hoppy bitter explosion’ that I like in most double ipa. Maybe that’s a nod to the brand of Stoudt, being thicker and all. Nuffield (2718), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Mar 24, 2006 Thick and syrupy, slightly hazy amber. Thiis doesn’t give me any greater sense of hops than a typical IPA, but the base is different, with a sweet front, citrus and pine resonating nicely through the middle, and a sense of alcohol effervescing in the finish--a bit like varnish in fact (I’ve been doing a lot of DIY lately.) The flavor actually seems a bit thin, given that the body promises richness. Not bad, but I don’t think it lives up to its bill. Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Mar 24, 2006 Pours a light orangish color with a thin white head. Aroma is of grapefruit citrus, caramel, alcohol, and a very small hint of hops. Aroma is very sweet for a double IPA, and not quite as hoppy as I was hoping. Very sweet taste, a little citrusy, and alcohol warming to finish it up. A little dissapointed in this double IPA. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 22, 2006 Pours a hazy golden orange color with a decent sized 3 finger thick white head. Aroma of sweet malts, piney hops, citrus. Flavor is sweet, alcohol is present (but not to overbearing), citrusy, hoppy bitter finish, ok body, good brew. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Mar 21, 2006 Very hazy, yeasty brew, orange coloured with a thick lasting white head. Aroma is sweet, some cascadey notes but also some pine resin as well. The flavour comes across very alcoholic though. Some sweet crystal malts and a nice fruity hop character but there is just too much alcohol noticable in the flavour as well. The overall impression I get is a certain degree of lightness (both in body and in flavour). The hops are tasty enough and when mixed with all of the ethanol it seems quite floral, but it’s still just too boozy.
