Commercial Description:
Stoudt's Double IPA is a strong, full-bodied ale with an intense hop character and deep golden color. This unusual brew is characteristic of the newly recognized style of extremely hoppy and malty ales of American origin. The Double IPA is our strongest beer with an alcohol of over 10% abv and bitterness of more than 75 IBU's. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful yet smooth and fragrant hop character of this beer. 10% abv.

Bottled: Amber coloured. Unclear. Biege dense head. Herbal and flowery aroma. Some sweetness and citrus. Full hoppy aroma. Herbs, spices, malt, some caramel and fruits. Ends on a balanced bitterness. Quite delicious.

Thanks Eric!

The Lure:
Ripe oranges and grapefruit adhere to a prickly yet sensual flowery perfume. It’s so fresh and alive that the hops appear to be spiced.

The Festivities:
Bitterness is more welcoming than expected as the wondrous malt does its job perfectly. Every hop flavor is enveloped in malty sweetness : oranges dipped in a caramel sauce, grapefruit in the process of being candied, tart apples glistening from the honey coulis lasciviously dripping on them. All are respectful in this inspiring communion.

Transcendence:
Vibrant yet restraining from exuberance is a real breath of fresh air.

Pours cloudy with a tan head. Smells of perfume, wildflowers, yogurt and spices. Tastes of sweet oranges, roses and sweet malt.

Very hazy, yeasty brew, orange coloured with a thick lasting white head. Aroma is sweet, some cascadey notes but also some pine resin as well. The flavour comes across very alcoholic though. Some sweet crystal malts and a nice fruity hop character but there is just too much alcohol noticable in the flavour as well. The overall impression I get is a certain degree of lightness (both in body and in flavour). The hops are tasty enough and when mixed with all of the ethanol it seems quite floral, but it’s still just too boozy.

Clear amber orange with a billowy thick white head. Faint grapefruit hop scent (it’s a bit cold). Creamy and vinuous, oily and solid body. Flavorful candy sugar, gummi bears and grapefruit and mandarin orange hop flavor. Decently bitter and drying on the palate, but not a full-blown palate wrecker. Well-made, but a little watery and plain over the middle and in the finish.

To me, this came across as a thick APA more than an IIPA or even an IPA. Orange and headless, it darned near poured out like orange syrup. The aroma was mainly sweet malt with a suggestion of hop bitterness. Almost chewy, it tasted of caramel and toffee with a light earthy bitterness that didn’t make it to the finish. Not a bad brew, but not what I’d expected.

Murky amber liquid with a few occasional chunk swimming about. Rather large fluffy beige head that leaves a few specks of lace as it recedes. Very fruity aromas, with apricots, bananas and grapefruit mixing quite well. Some floral aromas also thrown into the fray. Some higher alcohols seem to come out as it warms. Thinner in feel than I expected, but not to thin as to seem watery. Hops are everywhere in the flavor, but not overpowering. Mildly citric, lightly acidic, and slightly floral in hops flavor profile. A general sweetness balances, but it lacks much in the malt depth department. If you like high hops and alcohol , this is your type of brew. Many thanks to DocLock and tidiaguy.
