3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 Being a fan of Stoudt’s Karnival Kölsch, this is a nice little twist. Crystal clear golden body, small white head, spotty lacing. Soft pale malts, the lemon marmalade is clearly present with a nice sharp, zesty, and refreshing aroma of sweet lemons. Flavor is similar with the lemon and german malts forming a delicate, refreshing and easy drinking experience. Appropriately carbonated, with a nice medium to light body. A nice find when its available.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Tria rittenhouse square. Pours straw with an inch of white foam. Faint notes of lemon on the nose. Really prominent lemon on the tongue but not in any sort of artificial way. The lemon seems to bring a tartness to the beer and bring out its inherent fruitiness. Clean finisher. Probably my favorite kolsch so far.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Alla Spina in Philadelphia, PA.
Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color with a two finger pillowy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
This beer is made with lemon marmalade and has a really strong citrus presence on top of the more traditional kolsch characteristics. Lots of citrusy lemon curd along with floral and citrus hops, bread and pale malt. The lemon dominates making it smell like a dessert beer but the tradional elements of the style are still noticeable.
Medium bodied and more balanced than I expected based on the nose. There is a good amount of lemon and citrus flavor but it’s countered by a prominent crisp hop bite that cuts through the sweetness and lingers into a slightly dry finish. Not overly dry of bitter with some tropical/citrus fruit notes as well as some bread, biscuit and pale malt. I thought that I was going to get a lemon overload but this beer is decently balanced yet the other elements. Refreshing and easy to drink.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Alla Spina, pours a straw golden color, with cloudy, and thin bubbly white head. Minimal lacing, very well carbonated. Aromas are pure lemon sorbet. Taste is fresh herbs, lemons, orange juice, wheaty grain finish. Slightly dry. Very good beer that hit the spot on a disgustingly humid night.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Alla Spina. 10 oz tulip glass. Pours golden with thin but fluffy white head that provided solid lacing. Sweet lemon and German malt on the nose. Slightly sweet with a little hint of tart from the meyer lemon marmalade. Lemon flavor is not overwhelming with plenty of flavor from the malts and yeast. Kolsch is not a style I drink frequently but I think this is very solid and for a great cause.
