COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This unique ale merges the smooth and complex richness of an Oatmeal Stout with the assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. Fat Dog has an inviting silky-black color, a prominent roasted malt character, and a chocolatey, coffee-like finish.

VTHopHead (1331) - Barre, USA - FEB 21, 2010
Draft at Three Penny Taproom - Poured a very dark black/brown in color with a thick, creamy dark head that produced some truly excellent lacing on the glass. Aroma was strong of dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. A hint of alcohol present too. Flavor is malty with coffee and chocolate with a hint of vanilla and dark fruit. Some hop bitterness at the end. Palate is thick and chewy. Finish is of dark roasted malts and coffee. Alcohol is very well hidden. Really good...

Poured from 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with creamy thick head. Aroma is roasted malts with a bit of coffee. This one resembles and smells more like a porter than an imperial stout. Taste is roasted malts and some back end bitterness. Decent beer.

12 oz. bottle in pint glass. Pours dark as expected for style. Little to no head. Little carbonation, noticeable only on close examination. Aroma is chocolate or roast. Taste is pretty one-noted, oatmeal is not obvious to me at the glass half full mark. A tasty stout, but not remarkable.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown color with a bit khaki head. The nose is of brown sugar and oatmeal, heavy roasted malts, bitter chocolate. The taste is sweet and a bit hot. The finish is dry. The palate is oily and smooth, the finish long. Overall, solid.

Had this once on cask or draft...and it was my favorite stout that way for a while. The bottle is great but not quite as lovely. Aroma of alcohol burnt sugar and malt, soy, licorise. Black with dark tan head and fine lacing that lasts. Taste is sweet, but spicy and burnt bitter as it finishes. Thick sticky and enveloping feel. A potent and big brew without being over the top.

Bottle. The pour was a non transparent very dark brown almost black with an average sized (1-2 finger) thick creamy head and had decent retention which diminished down to a spotty residue. This allowed for some excellent sheets of lacing that coated the glass rather nicely. The aroma was of a burnt chocolate malt and the moderate odor of a leathery yeast with notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and molasses and a decent scent of alcohol towards the end. The taste was very malty and bold with a nice note of chocolate and a hint of molasses in the beginning and finished with a nice bitter coffee flavor that had a mild alcohol tinge at the end. The flavor lingered for a real long time which allowed the bold alcohol coffee flavor to settle nicely on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was quite full in body with the texture being nice and creamy, and yet a little dry with the carbonation being a tad on the mild side. Overall an exceptional Imperial Stout that had an explosion of flavor and a nice dose of alcohol that worked very well together.
