3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rated 7/23/07. Solid black pour with just the faintest hint of brown at the edges when held to the light. Medium to small tan head that left behind minimal lacing. The aroma is heavily geared towards roasted barley, with burnt popcorn, chocolate, and coffee all helping the cause. I did sense a bit of a metallic tinge, which was unexpected, but not strong enough to really bring things down. The beer smells fairly bitter, but not unpleasantly so. The taste supports that bitter claim that the aroma makes, but a huge amount of oatmeal smooths things out and makes sure the bitterness doesn’t get too out of control. The sugar content doesn’t really make itself known in the flavor, but it reveals itself in a somewhat sticky palate. This is a pretty big beer, and it is well executed, but I think a few small tweaks could make it better.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled 14AUG12 (I think, month was a bit smudged)
Dark brown with a nice quilt of fine light cocoa foam. Smells of graham, toast, bits of chocolate, some toasted malts and a good dose of coffee beans. Taste is real nice, smooth, oaty, slightly sharp with coffee, sweet cocoa powder, and fudgy dark chocolate. Full bodied with light, fluffy carb and a watery but dry finish. Nice beer.

Bottle. Pouts a dark black color with a short lasting java head. Nose is deep chocolate and roasted coffee with sweet malt. Taste is chocolate and coffee with fruity notes ( a hint of cherry ) . Finish is bitter sweet and end abruptly on the same tasting notes. Quaff Score 8 / 10

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: Opaque chestnut body with a short tan head, settling into a foamy ring.
Aroma: Milk chocolate with a light roasted character, semi-sweet.
Taste: Deep chocolate sweetness, slightly syrupy, with a nice roasted character. Very tasty.
Palate: Creamy bodied, chewy, moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is a great oatmeal stout that I have passed up a million times. There’s great balance between the roasted and chocolate malts. Shame Stoudts has awful labels, it’s very easy to just walk past these.

Like many porters, the aroma is the best part of the experience. Sweet and chocolate smell. A bit more bitter than I expected.

Dark and roasty with a mild nutty hint. Almost reminiscent of peanut butter but not quite. IBUs and Alcohol are both invisible. Tasty Tasty brew.
