MrChopin (206), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 12, 2008 Nose, initially of dark fruit/raisins, turns to roast malt, coffee, and chocolate. Beer is black with disappearing small tan head. Taste is sweet chocolate and some roast with slight oat/hop in the aftertaste. A creamy beer that’s a little clean but still quite good. Absolutely no detection of 9% ABV.
Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Oct 7, 2008 There’s some dark brown to the blackness. Rich, thick head. Some fudge and some slight nail polish phenols in the aroma. Rich milk chocolate body with more nail polish but it just gets annihilated by rich, oaty, roasty goodness. douglas88 (818), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Oct 4, 2008 Bottle thanks to Thaichile. Pours a dark black hue with a large brown head. The aroma is full of rich chocolates, coffee, oatmeal, and light hops. The flavor is very nice; a robust roasted malt which is well matched by the strong oatmeal and chocolate flavors. A medium and creamy mouthfeel. A bit of earthy and not very aggressive in a nice way. The alcohol is very subdued. Very nice. Beerman6686 (780), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 30, 2008 Poured a dark dark brown with a tan head. Aroma was really roasted with a nice coffee flavor. Flavor was fairly bitter, not hoppy bitter but bitter chocolate and burnt coffee. Pretty good stuff. MaltOMeal (321), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Sep 28, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours brown into black with a nice tan head. Nose was roast malt and espresso with a touch of alcohol. Taste was of roast malt and coffee with oat to balance. Mouthfeel was medium and dry and a tad chalky. Pretty good. timsilvia32 (249), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Sep 24, 2008 Blackish pour, nice tan head. Roast malt aroma, some grass, hop/pine. Fairly lively mouthfeel. Roast malts and a definete oat tone. Some chocolate, more coffee. Finish a little bitter. Lingers pretty well. Not earth shattering, but very good. Deserving of an average rating right about where it’s at.
