On tap at Ortinoís Northside... Appears a turbid, russett toned amber with a small white head that fades into a small cap and collar. Spotty streaks of lacing are left around the glass. Smell is of vanilla, American Oak, dark fruit, caramel, sugar, roasted nuts, and mild citrus blasts. Taste is of the mentioned aromas with oak tannins taking over the brew. Mouthfeel is smooth with light syrup...the smoothest barleywine that I remember having, especially being this young. Overall, itís a nice tasting, slightly sweet brew with an oakiness that seems to take over the brew.

Pretty unassuming for a barley wine, very subtle. Sweet malty aroma, pour is normal for the style, malty taste, little warmth.

(750ml bottle) cloudy deep orange, wispy tan bubbles. Nose is hoppy and sweet, candied hops, cream, lactose, funky, moss, yogurt. Taste is quite sweet, honey, light pine, unbalanced towards sweet, almost no carb.

On draft @ Stoudts. Pours a beautiful auburn caramel color with a fingers worth of head that quickly fades to a lacy ring Sweet bread smell with a hint of hops on the nose. Smooth malty toffee taste with again a faint hop presence in the aftertaste. Not the best barleywine I have had. But certainly nowhere near the worst. Good stuff.

Bomber from some old (2008) trade.

Iím a bit of a moron for leaving this one in the cellar for so long. Relatively dark pour, decent head given the age. Cheese and wet cardboard nose of oxidized hops. Quite dry with a sort of lemon marmalade on burnt toast kind of thing. Really not very good.

Pours amber with an off white head. Aroma is earthy, caramel and dark fruits. Taste is sweet with trace bitters, mostly sweet though. Medium bodied, smooth and creamy mouth feel with soft carbonation. Had off tap and it was much better then some of the reviews here, maybe there was an issue with the bottling.

Cheers for the 8.5%. But thatís about it. Everything else was very middle of the road. the flavor and body were very understated. Three words come to mind when I tried this one, weak, meek , and small.

In short: A boring toasted and caramelized amber ale with oxidation. Meh.
How: Bottle 750ml, corked & caged. Age unknown, a few bottles bought not so long ago in Vermont but the taste makes me seriously doubt the freshness, probably an old dusty case found in the Winooski storage room.
The look: Cloudy dark amber body topped by a small beige head.
In long: Nose is basic toasted cereals with hints of cardboard oxidation. Taste is toasted cereals (bread crust), some caramel (less than expected for the style), earthy notes, some cardboard notes, distant notes of hops resin. Plenty of bubbles in a medium body. Not very sweet at all, especially for the style. Not very tasty either. No complexity, straight-up toastiness with a bit of caramel and not much else going on except for the oxidation. Very boring beer. I think one of my favorite beer store sold me an old bottle, but as I often say: fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, fool me 634 times youíre a beer store and youíll fool me many many more times.
