Stoudt’s Scotch-style ale features a deep, burnished-copper color, sweet and very full-bodied palate, and well-defined characteristics of roasted and peat-smoked malt. This beer is brewed from the finest European ingredients and uses one of the few ale yeasts that ferments cool (55°) and is cold-conditioned or lagered for six weeks prior to bottle-conditioning.

Very good, smooth, but not quite as smooth as I would hope/expect for this style and from Stoudt’s. I really like this, just not quite as much as a couple other Scotch Ales. And, the large bottle is pretty pricey for not being phenomenal.

Bottle aged for more than five years. Big malt, malty aroma, peat in the finish. Very smooth and drinkable.

650 ml bottle thanks to someone at the tasting 1/23/10 at Eric’s. Pours a dark brown color with a medium white head. A rich malty scotch ale nose, earthy and light chocolates. A smooth flavor; a well-done scotch ale, smooth rich malts, earthy, lots of sweet chocolates and fruity musty malts. Very easygoing and tasty. Nice.

Bottled. A hazy dark red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has strong notes of alcohol, over ripe fruits, prunes, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, over ripe fruits, coffee, caramel, and berries. The body is light. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Miver. Pours a clear orangey brown with a beige head. Lovely oxidized wooden Bourbon aroma. Solid body, burned caramel and roasted malts. Sweet Bourbon accents. No bitterness, but some alcohol. Lovely. 130909

750mL bottle from the ’07/’08-ish? release. Poured deeper amber with a short cap of beige head.. quite a lovely color. The aroma was sweet with smoked peat and caramel specked with mild leafy accents.. brighter earth and faint citrus notes hit the back of the nose.. soft, somewhat simple, and entirely enjoyable. The flavor was along those same lines with caramel, cocoa, and biscuity malts at the core supporting light earthy bitterness, somewhat sour peaty smoke, and herbs.. finished with a long smoky caramel impression. Medium-bodied with adequate carbonation on the palate.. sweet overall, but it dried out nicely on the back-end.. well-balanced and very, very easy to drink!
