| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Apr 8, 2006 Pours a cloudy dark reddish-orange color with a very thin white head. Aroma is sweet of fruits, spices, and alcohol. Flavor is pretty much the same with some alcohol warming to finish. A decent brew but I’ve had better from Stoudt’s. entertheiceman (242), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | Mar 30, 2006 A decent beer absolutely ruined by the dry chalk palate. Very spicey and promising in the beginning of the mouth, that gives way to the taste of licking a dusty chlakboard in the back of the throat. CJfromPhilly (82), Aston, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Bottle dated 2/18/06: Pours a hazy copper color, looks very much like unfiltered apple juice. Mild carbonation with tons of small particles suspended in the glass (i’m assuming that it’s yeast sediment, this being a bottle conditioned ale). The aroma is sweet and fruity, some candi sugar, perhaps? Taste is fruity as well, hints of apple, orange peel and (surprisingly) peach. The alcohol is fairly noticeable on the swallow, not overwhelming but it makes its presence felt enough to take a little off the drinkability factor. Average mouthfeel. Overall, a nice warming sipper, I will be picking up more of this very soon! Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 20, 2006 I’m enjoying this right now in sunny Florida. I had a case brought down from Pennsylvania around Christmastime. And no, this isn’t the first one I’m drinking….I’m about half a case in. In any case, word on the street is that Stoudt’s is going to be distributed in Florida....hmmmmm. Traditional Abbey Tripel....spicy and fruity aromatics. Pours an orangey hue with a fine lacing of foam. Covers its strength well (I’m downing this one in more than just sips and its definitely going to my head). Another fine beer from this brewery. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Mar 20, 2006 Bottle courtesy of Blake. Clear amber body, white soap suds head. Caramel-sweet aroma with peat, overripe melon, and doughy yeast. Big peppery, alcholic flavor. Starts with sugary coffee cake finishing with bitter metallic hops. Intense alchol burn/pepper throughout. Burning, tingly mouthfeel. The flavor is way too peppery for my taste. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 20, 2006 Slightly hazy, but shiny gold with a red hue to it. Dusty, sparse head. Fruity sweet and spice belgian aroma. Cloves, some pepper, melon / cantalope... pretty good aroma. Nice and full. Flavor is belgian spice, some saltines, sweet fruit, some dry yeast, roses (?), slightly dry hops... pretty good in small amts, but a bit overpowering for a 12oz. rebelbrewer (125), Lithonia, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 16, 2006 12 oz bottle has 3 gnomes overlooking a village with hops and grains also depicted. Says it is bottle conditioned Belgian Abbey-Style Ale and Microbrewed Beer. There is no notation of the alcohol content. On the neck of the bottle it says that it was bottled on 9/13/05. And, “surprise”, I have 2 bottles and they are identical on the outside. I poured the 1st bottle into my snifter and the second into my new but old Trappist glass. I was dusting today when I picked up my cobalt blue goblet that has a very nice pewter dragon stuck on it. Damn! It’s been sitting there for years getting the occasional cleaning. I never realized what it was until today. Duh! I let the second bottle sit out while I drank the first. They both came out of a 44 degree fridge and they both sat out for 30 minutes before I opened the 1st one. Took about half an hour to drink it and write the review. As I go through the second one I’ll make notes where appropriate.
This triple poured a cloudy reddish gold into my snifter. There was no head. There is a small ring of foam around the inside of the glass. There is no lacing. (The second one did form a nice creamy white head, but it was gone in less than a minute. Still no lacing. No way I can determine the color of this one as it sits in that cobalt blue glass.)
There are faint fruity aromas with a little caramel, but that is all overwhelmed by a very pronounced rubbing alcohol odor. (That rubbing alcohol odor is not as pronounced on this second bottle. Is it the glass? Have my senses become numb? Nahh! Not yet!)
O.K. It is not as bad as I thought it would be based on its aromatic properties. There are some pretty complex things going on in the mouth. Fruity and then sweet caramel and they play against each other. Quite enjoyable. Then comes the swallowing part. Whack! The 9% ABV really steps up and imparts a nice warming feeling all the way down the gullet. I noticed no difference in taste between the two bottles. Stoudt’s triple fits its style well IMHO.
