COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Poured from a corked bottle in a Great Lakes tulip glass. Big pop of cork...pours a dark brown with big amber head. Aroma of dark malts, alcohol, and malt sweetness. Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of dark roasted malts, alcohol, caramel, molasses, dark chocolate, milk chocolate. Overall big and bold with a big alcohol strength coming through over the big malt body. After 10 minutes the alcohol resides a good amount.

Bottle@Brussels, July 2012. Murky dark brown color, tan head. Hoppy aroma with a hint of alcohol. Warming flavor with hops, juicy malts, dark chocolate, lavender, vanilla and plum. Wow. Full body, high carbonation. Very nice.

Top!

Bottle Pours a very dark brown color with a thin tan head on it. Nose is dark and fruity with some elements of raisins and figs in there, as well as some candied sugar. Taste is dark and subtly sweet, with just a hint of some roasting in there at the end. A very interesting quad.

Dark amber/brown pour with a small off-white head. Aromas of dark fruit, brown sugar, and yeast notes. Lots of malt on the palate with plum and almost a port like finish to it, the brown sugar character also shines through in the finish. The abv is well-hidden too. Delicious.

33 cl. bb Aug. 2016. Deep mahogany with a ring and smattering of bubbles. Aroma is chocolate toffee, dark grapes, dates, marshmallow and plum. Taste is cocoa, merlot, white pepper, clove, caramel, prunes and plum. Lightly toasted oak plus touches of cured tobacco and soy on the long finish. Medium-heavy body strikes a delicate balance and shows a gentle touch of abv warmth. Also has a higher level of carbonation than I like, but it seems likely the flare-ups in the mouth help to ease the richness of this brew more than they detract.
