Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bière crémeuse. Le goût de l’alcool est prédominant. L’arrière goût s’estompe assez vite.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Dried fruit, caramel and malts on the nose. Similar taste. Sweet but light body. A bit boozy. The flavours haven’t quite come together. Probably needs some time in the cellar.

Longlasting smoked taste, some fruits as well. High amount of alcohol noticable in the taste. Nice colour. Aroma not very noticable when cold. A very fine quadrupel, probably best in the winter

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2014 Bottle fem one of the grocery in Brussels. Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, launched in 2010, is an intense beer, dark in colour and full in taste. Of course not as good as Rochefort 10 or La Trappe Quadrupel but still good actually.

Deep mahogany brown with a creamy cream-coloured head. Aromas of fresh allspice, cinnamon, cloves, molasses and dried currants. The first taste is a violently puffy and exploded on the tongue before llowing sensations of orange peel and allspice again to come through. Maybe some crystalised ginger and apple strudel? Dry finishing. A tasty devil.

Served cold at the brewery :( Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head that dies almost instantly. The nose is sweet with toffee and caramel notes, dried fruit aromas of prune and raisin about. A bit effervescent on the first sip with a first impression of a syrupy and rich brew. Rich malt profile with a bit of candy sugar and prune notes. Not overly robust but has a nice boozy accent. A good quad!
