COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle:   Deep deep brown, moderate frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Soft dark pitted fruits and apple skin on a bed of bready alcohol.   Bright and spritzy up front, warming, strong apple skin.   Not as much dark pitted fruit as the nost suggested, even as minor as it was.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, seemingly more bubbley than most.   By the finish there is a bit more dark pitted fruit, but its overshadowed with a champagne like spritzy alcohol flair.   Pale fruit skin seems to reside start to finish.   While appearing to be a quad, it comes across as a bit lighter in body, flavor, but not in alcohol.   Tiz okay, but needs to be heavier and perhaps breadier with more dark pitted fruit in there.   Glad to have tried it tho.   Thanks Jason for the bottle!

Bottle at obx. Poured a dark ruby color with very generous head. Strong aroma that bursts with dark fruits like raisin, candy, belgium yeast, cherries. Medium light sweetness. Finishes slightly dry. Warming alcohol. Creamier palate. Very complex flavors. Getting dark fruit. Great belgium sipper.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a hazy amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, spices, brown sugar and dry notes. Flavour of brown sugar, Belgian spices and slight yeast. Quite complex, with a good dry, low sweetness quality. Very solid.

I had something calling itself Straffe Hendrik last night, this is the only beer by that name that seems to fit the description. Deep, opaque brown, tastes of coffee, brown sugar, an a slight burnt taste. Very good.

Bottle @Bruges. Dark brown coloured beer with high carbonation and a huge but diminishing tan head. Slight sweet dark fruit aroma, hints of burned sugar and alcohol. Medium body with a sweet malt, slightly roasted flavor. Finish is quite sweety dry.

33cl bottle. Pours dark chestnut brown with billowing tan head that sticks around with decent lacing. Aroma is full of dark fruits: plums, cherries, figs, dates are prominent. Also notes of spices, brown sugar, and a touch of booze. Taste is again full of the deep dark fruits alongside spicy yeast complexity, caramel, deep maltiness, and a definite note of alcohol and hop bitterness. A well balanced quad that doesn't quite hit the heights of its other Belgian peers - still a bloody good beer though.

Tap at SIBF 2012. Pours a murky brown, with sweet dark fruits and baking spices predominant. Lovely, and the flavor follows. Hops on the back, but this is mostly sweet brown sugar and fruit -- similar to pannepot. Just great -- one of my new favorite quads!
