COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Pours dark brown. No foam, no carbonation. Aromas are very nice: candied fruit, yeast, roasty malt. Mouth is a bit smoky, yeast focused with rich English cake-like notes ... but there is no carbonation at all. Something was wrong with that batch. it will be worth tasting it again.

33cl bottle @ home. Wow what a great beer. Darker than a normal quad. Great taste.

Bottle. Pours brown with a huge beige head. Aroma of malt, soap, spices, caramel, red apples and nuts. Flavor is sweet caramel with some caramel, sugar and spices. Medium to full body, soft carbonation.

Bottle. It pours an almost clear body, dark ruby in color and with a dense, light beige head. Lots of sugar and dried fruits on the nose, some anise, and a touch of roasted malts. The flavor is dominated by dried fruits, with anise, white sugar, dark sugar and some bitterness. Medium to full body, pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish with dried fruits. Certainly a nice one, but not the typical quadrupel. 121102

Bottle 330ml @ Geokkjer
Pours reddish deep brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, dried fruits, alcohol and yeast. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with a very fruity and warm finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle - a near black, near perfect beer. This was quality. Lots of liquorice, coffee, chocolate, fruit, malt... oh, so many. Very complex beer, well balanced with a boozy warm kick at the end. Need another now! Waiter!

17th Oct 2012 Brugge: after draught De Garre and Gulden Draak my wife dragged me out of De Garre and into the Red Rose, here I choose a 33cl bottle of this. Coming in the bottle. the correct glass was offered to me to pour my beer into; I did. This is a dark, brooding brew: with a creamy head in both colour and texture. The nose is all about malty molasses: so strong and sweet nothing else got a look in. Luckily the taste wasnít as sweet as the aromas suggested. The malts were certainly the dominant flavour but there is a hop bitterness stopping the beer becoming a malt smoothy and the alcohol doesnít hide away: it is very prominent once the beer has touched your lips. Looked great and in such a fine bar it is difficult not to score it highly: but Iím being objective and truthful in my numbers, it deserves the scores itís getting from me.

Botelja. Clear like reddish brown farvi wit a medium beige head, some lacing. Sweet aroma of well toasted malt and caramel with dark fruits, some alcohol and bit chocolate. Good mouthfeel. Sweet flavour, dark maltiness and caramel with dark fruits, alcohol, bit chocolate and a soft bitterness. Sweet finish.

Bottled. Dark and hazy ruby colour, frothy medium-sized head. Aroma is full of dark fruits, dried plums and fermented fruits. A whiff of alcohol mixing with molasses and slightly burnt sugar. Pleasant, coocked perry, banana and colves from the yeast. Dryish yeasty, surprisingly bitter flavor let darker malt and sugar aromas shine. Soft and smooth, deviously light palate. A very well balanced quadrupel.
