COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

I had something calling itself Straffe Hendrik last night, this is the only beer by that name that seems to fit the description. Deep, opaque brown, tastes of coffee, brown sugar, an a slight burnt taste. Very good.

Bottle @Bruges. Dark brown coloured beer with high carbonation and a huge but diminishing tan head. Slight sweet dark fruit aroma, hints of burned sugar and alcohol. Medium body with a sweet malt, slightly roasted flavor. Finish is quite sweety dry.

33cl bottle. Pours dark chestnut brown with billowing tan head that sticks around with decent lacing. Aroma is full of dark fruits: plums, cherries, figs, dates are prominent. Also notes of spices, brown sugar, and a touch of booze. Taste is again full of the deep dark fruits alongside spicy yeast complexity, caramel, deep maltiness, and a definite note of alcohol and hop bitterness. A well balanced quad that doesn't quite hit the heights of its other Belgian peers - still a bloody good beer though.

Tap at SIBF 2012. Pours a murky brown, with sweet dark fruits and baking spices predominant. Lovely, and the flavor follows. Hops on the back, but this is mostly sweet brown sugar and fruit -- similar to pannepot. Just great -- one of my new favorite quads!

Bottle at Boekencafe Schrijvers, Eindhoven. Pours dark copper brown almost black with creamy lasting off-white head. Aroma is very fragrant with malt, caramel, apples, melon, yeast, wine and alcohol with hints of dill and fennel. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Body is creamy with good carbonation. Finish is heavy bitter with licorice, yeast and strong fruity notes. Very good beer!

33cl bottle. Poured dark brown with a lasting beige/brown head. Aroma is fruity, spicy, yeasty and malty, heavy caramel. Flavor is spicy at first, then sugary caramel malt come rushing, then more dark fruits. sweet, alcohol finish. Heavy, full bodied.

12 oz Draft. Pours heavy dark brown with thin head. Coffee and chocolate flavors wonderfully cover up the high alcohol content.

Bottle, with Joe. Poured deep brown with beige head and loads of lacing. aromas of figs, apples, caramel malt, fruity esters. Taste was similiar with a more roasty fruit dominance and some belgian yeast. Finish is sweet and warming.

Wonderfully tangy scent with hints of yeast, raisins, apples and fruit. The taste is the same with a soft tone and warming alcohol. One of the best Abt / Quadrupel I have ever tasted!
