COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bought a four pack from a supermarket in Belgium as something else to try. With hindsight I wish I had bought all their remaining stock. The flavour is of burnt toffee shot through with liquorish with a constant sweetish tang. I also compared it with a Westvleteren 12 which my partner was drinking. Were I trying these two in a blind tasting, I might just come down on the side of the Straffe Hendrik.

Very potent. High in alcohol, bit of a burn. Flavour somewhat like coffee and licorice.

Bottle. This beer combines dark brown hues with the reds found in a cola. It sports a nice layer of tan foam that remains steady. A nose of rich dark malts and dark fruit. The first sip brings tasty fruit and then some more aggressive malts. Raisin is nice and grain is big as is nut bread. Alcohol is not tasted. This would be a very nice winter beer with the warming it provides.

caramel, bread, citrus, spruce, earthy, brown, cloudy, white foam, minimal head, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, creamy, soft carbonation. Intensely flavoured with nice hoppy aroma. Quite different from other quadrupels, less heavy.

Draft at Beer Art, Thessaloniki, Greece - pours beautiful dark, brown-red with huge tan-white lasting head. Big dark plums, nice esters, and dried fruit notes with a bittering hopped finish. Very good, lacing is gorgeous.

Bottle @ home. Murky brown pour, huge foamy off-white head. Aroma is faint roasty, fruity, and spicy. Flavor is spicy bitter fruits, somewhat roasty, sweet sugar and lingering bitterness. Thick body, lively carbonation.

0.33l bottle from beermerchants.com This one immediately fills the room with a dark-fruity, caramel sweet and malty aroma. The pour is light cloudy and deep raw amber and it has a big and everlasting almost fluffy beige head. Oh, you can really sense the warming stingy alcohol in this one! It’s average to lively carbonated with a rich full-boded texture. Lots of plums and dark ripe fermented fruits, green apples, some cocoa and chocolate paper hints also, before it ends in a heavy warming light sweet finish and aftertaste. At some times the raw boozyness can be a bit disturbing, but you quickly get used to that. A nice heavy quad! 30.04.2012

Dark blond with a white medium head. Very weak aroma. Light fruity, hoppy with a some alcohol shining through. I am slightly disappointed. I had expected more after reading the ratings.
