Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottled sample at the 2nd Annual Top of the Hops Charlottesville, VA beer festival, 9/10/11. Pours a slightly hazy copper-brown color with a medium sized brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of berries, cherries and brown sugar. The taste is big brown sugar notes, toffee, berries, bready notes and a spicy finish. Medium bodied. Nice.

NDB, NY 11.2oz ($4): Pours a reddish brown that is nearly opaque; it is covered by a pretty head that leaves a thick lacing. Aroma has the Belgian yeast, plenty of fruitiness, and a whiff of liqueur. This is kind of a mellow quad. Fortunately not too sweet and also the alcohol is well covered up and becomes apparent only in the aftertaste a tad. Hops are really on the down low. Dark fruit is most prominent. Leaves a sort of sticky feel in the mouth, but is very palatable in general. Not really the most complex quad in the world though.

Strong alcohol percentage, with it’s 11% Although I am not a dark beer favourite, it has a great taste (not too much coffee taste)

Bottle: The aroma consists of dark fruits, chocolate, candi sugar, spice, and light alcohol. It pours a dark reddish-brown with some transparency when held to the light and two finger khaki head with decent retention. There is some sporadic dotting for lacing. The flavor starts with dark fruits and candi sugar. The finish has some spice, faint sweet citrus notes, and initially just a hint of alcohol. As it warms, the alcohol intensifies. The alcohol isn’t overbearing or necessarily hot, but it could be toned down a touch. It’s medium bodied with lively carbonation that manages to come across more soft than prickly. Overall, a tasty Quad, but not up there with the elites.

Poured from bottle, pours a burnt amber with a red hue in the light and a thin head, the aroma is of candy sugar with dark fruit and plum, the flavor is of dark fruit on the front end with a little bit of alcohol burn in the finish, nothing out of this world but still enjoyable.

Bottle. Reddish brown beer with a strong brownish head. The aroma is roasted and malty, and the flavour is quite deeply spiced with a gingerness about it and a bitter roasted and malty finish. Overall a reasonable strongly malty and spiced beer.
